Why to Shave with a Safety Razor - Beginner Series Ep. 1
The first video in my shaving Beginner Series about how to shave with a Safety Razor. Making the switch to a safety razor is a worthy investment that will not only ...
Hi. I have very sensitive skin. Is it OK to practice once a week with a
safety razor and use my Mach3 in between? I ask because my face feels and
looks like it needs a a break after my first attempt tonight. Thanks
+bromixsr Thanks for reply. I'm using a highly recommended cream, good brush and razor. I follow all the advise. Even after 3 passes its still missing hairs on neck and moustache area, and yet my skin instantly is raw, tight and just dreadful looking. Yes I also use a good moisturiser. So it's my hope I can use my Mach3 the rest of the week while I practice with the safety razor once a week, otherwise I feel like my face will be destroyed.
+5hanes Now the more you can use a safety razor, the more you will figure out how to use one properly, but don't do so till it is unbarable. Just some basic tips: Get a good shaving soap/cream, preferably one for sensitive skin that is not alcohol based as alcohol can dry the skin out. An aftershave helps, as well. All this being said, if using a cartridge razor in conjunction works for you..then do so. Everyone is different and only they know what they really need.
Nice video Nick. I've just switched over to "wet shaving" with a DE razor.
I would have to say that my Gillette Mach 3 still gives me a better shave
than the DE razors I've been using. It's probably a user error on my part,
but I'm not seeing better shaves with DE razors. Maybe it's b/c I'm new at
this and don't know what I'm doing yet, but I find myself going back to the
Mach 3 every now and then when I want a truly close shave. And it feels
like I'm losing a pint of blood every time I use the DE razor, but I'm
sticking with it (until I run out of blood) and hoping the experience gets
better.
+John Smith Thanks John. I'm hanging in there. I've got about a year or more worth of razors, so no giving in right now. I do still use the Mach 3's from time to time though. I tried the 2 blade Gillette's awhile back and they just didn't do it for me like the Mach 3's. I try to catch them on sale whenever I can or find a coupon here and there. I actually enjoy the process of shaving with DE razors, just not the results generally. :)
Reginald, i actually switched from DE back to cartridge shaving a few years ago because the time, effort and pain wasn't worth it to me. But instead of going back to my Mach 3, i decided to switch to an old school 2 bladed Gillette Sensor. Let me suggest that if things don't work out for u in the DE world, to give vintage cartridges a shot. They're cheaper than Mach 3 blades, and with stropping on a towel, i can get well over 20 shaves with a Sensor cart that i can buy in a five pack at Family Dollar for 7 bucks. Don't kill yourself. Trac II, Atra and Sensor are great throwback carts that can save you money without the DE headache.
How to Wet Shave: A Beginners guide to shaving with a Safety Razor
This is my guide to your first shave with a safety razor. I recommend a few products and do a complete one pass shave with a safety razor.
Thank you for the informative video. I'm a straight razor user, but I've
been double-edge curious for awhile now. Out of all the videos of DE
shaving I watched I enjoyed yours the most. You've convinced me that DE
razors can also achieve that "classic" look and feel.
Ive been loving the omega S Brush and for a beginner I would recommend it
as there is no need to soak it and they wont get scared away by the bad
smell.
+Finq08 OH MAN, Badgers are fantastic....not ethically the best choice. But a nice badger can be so soft yet have some backbone. You can literally get a badger with any characteristics you like. The good ones are more expensive though.
+The Canuck Shaver eew. I've never smelled a badger, but it does indeed look like it can have a very funky odor. When I got into wet shaving, I also found it funny that brushes are made from badgers. I always imagined them to be super scratchy and bristly, but the badger brushes are very soft.
I'd have loved to listen to every youtube video that told me that for my
first shave to do only one pass...
I hope any NEW wet shaver will listen to that advice :D
Anyway very nice video, keep it up!
+Xavier LaRue Cheers !!! I hope this can help lots of guys and girls out.
A Beginner's Review of DE Safety Razor Shaving and Blades.
I have been shaving with a new DE Safety Razor for about two months and did a lot of research before I started and thought I would pass along my thoughts as a ...
Just wanted to add to this and say I really like another blade I have
recently tried after watching another review video from ShavetheMan, they
are the PolSilvers, very sharp, smooth across the skin. A little pricer
than the Astra's but I have seen them as low as $23 for 100 blades, more
typically about $33 for 100 blades.
+Mark Brooks Also, one of my earlier replies went missing for some reason, but I recommended taking a look at the new Wilkinson Sword Classic blades (very comfortable while being sharper and more consistent than Derbys which supposedly use similar comfort technology) and the Russian-made Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (i.e. Gillette Blacks) blades, both of which are also available on Amazon. Still, your favorite Astra SPs are very good.
Hmm. Well, I don't know how long those tinyurls work, but at Amazon you can search for "Personna Double Edge Razor Blades" and they should be the first thing that comes up. About $13 for a 100-count container and Amazon Prime-eligible.
+ncmcgoverns Oh, and just one more. Here's a link to the Personna American blades from Verona, VA://preview.tinyurl.com/o2vpl8You may see references to "Personna Blue Platinum" on Amazon or EBay -- that's completely wrong, they are Personna Reds, just in a different packaging for a different market. You can tell when you see an image of the container and the word "Personna" is in RED. Those are Israeli Reds. The true "Personna Lab Blues" are the ones that I just provided you the link to. There is also a Personna Med Prep that folks swear by, but I haven't tried them. They are rather expensive, but the folks who use them seem to love them.Give the American Personnas a try and see what you think. The old American Safety Razor factory in Verona is the last place where DE blades are manufactured in the U.S. They are owned by Energizer/Schick now and their future is uncertain, alas.
+ncmcgoverns Spooky! My go to blades are Astra and razor os merkur 34c is my favourite razor! I have also just got some sandalwood from TOBS too! As far as flights go, you absolutely cannot take DE blades in carry-on luggage, so I either check in luggage or just get hairy until I get back! Let me know how it all goes.
+David Evans Still doing it and don't think I will ever go back to cartridge blade shaving. I had a short trip with a flight where I was only doing carry-ons and wasn't sure of the laws regarding flying with DE blades in a carry-on so for two days I went back to using a cheep cartridge and reminded me how much I do not like those! My latest thing has been trying out new soaps/creams but will say it is hard to beat Taylor of Old Bond St. Sandlewood for me! I am still using the Astra's and then I do use the Crystals when I travel simply because they are just as good and come in a little plastic case of ten that fits perfect in my razor travel case, other than still with Merkur 34C and Astra blades for normal every day shaves and do a 3 pass shave 99% of the time. Thanks for checking out my video and happy shaving!
I would like to ask you about the blade i'm using a feather one, so how
many time can i use it and is there any risk to use it again as sometimes
my skin came bloody.
I have viewed several 'how to...' videos and this one is by far the best.
It convinced me to give DE safety razor shaving a try again after 46 years.
To anyone new to this form of shaving I have two pieces of advice: go light
and go slow. The few times I have been in a hurry I have ended up applying
too much pressure and moved the razor too quickly resulting in a few nicks.
For me, the key is proper facial prep. I use a good pre-shave oil, the
Proraso shave cream, a high quality badger brush. and either of the several
DE razors GFB has recommended(I have four now). But I would not recommend
this type of shaving if you are in a hurry. If you're going to do more than
one pass you just have to accept the fact that it will take a bit longer
than what you're used to. As he says, it's all part of the "Zen
experience".
I have several shavettes and have single blades not the 2 that are together
my question is with the safety razor can you just put one side of the razor
with a blade in it it doesn't necessarily need the double edge?it should
hold it in fine right?
I recently bought a Van Der Hagen from my local grocery. At the tender age
of 17, I wanted to see what it felt like to truly shave like a man. I
watched your tutorial and absolutely loved shaving. Best shave I ever
had!!!
It's a good thing you watched this first, I tried out my Vander Hagen knowing nothing about DE shaving and shredded my mug all up! Lol. I love shaving now that I know what I'm doing.
+liam111liam My beard is insane. I use a DE razor with feathers to shave down and a G fusion to shave up. The reason why use the DE is because its much easier to shave down. Less taping less noise less hassle. Cant shave up even with a DE with feathers.
+Levon Fox I have those blades ,too. theyre really sharp
How to Shave with a Safety Razor Tutorial - Beginner Series Ep. 13

can anyone please suggest to me the ideal beginners kit like what razor and
shave handle to get, i am confused because i have heard there are mild and
aggressive razors, don't want to scar myself for life :)
+radioclash84 Hi, I would recommend an Edwin Jagger DE89L, as a good quality, but not too expensive (and fairly mild but to too much so) razor. Blade wide, I would suggest a sample pack in order to see what's best for your own face - personally I like Wilkinson Sword blades. Treat yourself to a good brush (but no need to break the bank, body shop do a nice synthetic one) and cream/soap, see the reviews here, although creams are often easier to start with, of in doubt try a TOBS one. Finally don't forget a cheap styptic pencil/alum block for the occasional nick, and an aftershave (try nivea sensitive). All the best, and good luck :)
thank you for this video, due to the cost of cartridge prices I have
decided to go with a safety razor but being 40 I been using the cartridge
razor for 25 years and I want to be little more old fashion, I am finding
you dont need 5 blades to get a baby ass smooth face. will it be okay to
use the can shaving cream which I have been using for almost 30's years,
Barbasol is the brand it's cheap and for the cartridge type shave I found
very good but since I am switching to a safety razor wonder if I need to
use the brush and shaving soap?
I personally find that using shaving gels and creams tends to be a bit thicker than soaps. This means the blades won't flow over the skin as easier. You'll definitely notice a difference if you switch over to soap and brush, but really it's whatever you find comfortable for your face, there's no wrong way to do it in the end, try both and make up your own mind, you can find brushes dirt cheap on Amazon and Wilkinson swords do a good cheap soap if you just want to try. Good luck.
I just started shaving with a safety razor yesterday. After three passes
(with, across, and against) I noticed that I had razor burn and bumps.
After this, I am concluding I should do with and across the grain (2
passes). I also did add pressure on my skin with the razor. Other than
that, what else should I do/not do to avoid the razor burn and bump. They
are irritating. I am Using a Parker razor, feather blades, proraso shaving
cream and I finish with Kiehls facial fuel. Any input would be appreciated.
3 passes is what I usually do, but instead of going against the grain on the 3rd pass I go across from the opposite side as the 2nd pass. You might like to try that.
You shouldn't have a problem with finding razors, they're almost universally compatible, but I recommend Merkur and Personna razor blades. If your husband is new to DE safety razors, i'd stay away from feather blades. Those can chop you up if you're not careful!
Started getting into Safety Razor shaving and I found your videos. Thanks a
lot. I'm glad you did these. I'll probably use a safety razor from here on
out.
Awesome man! Glad to have you. Best of luck and let me know how it goes

Safety Razor Care - Beginner Series Ep. 14
Fourteenth video in my Beginner Series about how to shave with a Safety Razor. I will cover post-shave and weekly safety razor care. With continual care, your ...
+nick shaves after having the DE89 (got it on sale, so it was cheaper than the 34c by a bit) I can say, that the EJ is almost "too mild" it works GREAT if you need an absolutely quick smooth shave and can get away without having the closest shave. I might have to pick up a 34c to check one out. I can get what I would call an "acceptable" shave using persona blues, and a very good shave with feathers. the blues are my fastest with a single pass, but they don't last more than 2 shaves at most, 3rd one being borderline unacceptable. feathers last a few shaves, but they are somewhat unforgiving if you don't know when to toss em.If i wanted to stay in the budget range of the 34c, but a bit more of an upgrade to get a closer/more aggressive shave, what would you recommend?
+nick shaves Dear Nick, have you ever considered to buy an ultrasonic cleaner to clean your safety razors? They are not expensive at all. I clean my safety razor (23c), glasses, watch from time to time with zippo lighter fluid, alcohol and water (alc. and gas just 5%,95%water!) and it`s like new.
34c! Though the DE89 is amazing - it is very mild. And though the 34c is mild, you can also put a feather blade in it and get a closer shave than is possible with the DE89
$2 Amazon Safety Razor

After reading reviews I just bought the Merkur 23C or more commonly know as
the Merkur 180 long handled safety razor. Have heard nothing but great
things about the company and this particular razor. I'd say if you are
making the switch back to a traditional shaving system why would you risk
cutting the heck out of yourself with a cheap safety razor.
Tried to reply to each of you but was unable. I'm looking forward to my new razor should arrive tomorrow and my shave cream brush and bowl on Saturday do either of you know if there is a good travel case that will fit the 23c I travel for a living plus would like to store it in case at home as well. Thanks!
I've been using a 23C for a little over a year. Well chosen - this is a fantastic razor for a beginner. With reasonable care it will last several lifetimes.
This razor is a piece of GARBAGE. I bought it about 1 year ago and the
safety guard was bent. I didn't even bother using it. I threw it right in
the trash where it belongs. I just bought a lord safety razor made in
Egypt. Cost about 10 dollars. MUCH better razor and better quality metal.
Can you reuse that handle? It looks like a nice long handle and if it has
some heft it might be an option for me. Please let me know if that handle
is interchangeable with other three parts. Thanks!
