Nystagmus
WATCH PART TWO HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bii_LUKiAm4 Nystagmus: involuntary eye movement This is in real-time. This is a video of me to ...
I saw this on a patient, who was on stroke alert, but it went away after we
gave her meds, not for the nystagmus though.
Idk if this is offensive, but it's kind of fascinating. I can't voluntarily
move my eyes that fast.
Question for nystagmus patients. Do you all drive a vehicle? I'm 35 years
years old, I have had Nystagmus since birth, along with ambyopia (one lazy
eye). Those two things are in addition to having myopia, which is only
moderate. I've also been classified as a potential glaucoma case down the
road. My visual acuity without glasses is 20/200 In both eyes, and
corrected is only about 20/50.
I tried driving in my teens and it was so hard to see road signs. I didn't
try again until 2013, and couldn't make out a sign until it was maybe 30
feet away...obviously not good. Driving in sunlight was tough just due to
the brightness (sensitivity to sunlight is somewhat common for nystagmus).
So, do any of you drive, and does anyone have a similar trio of conditions?
+kca741979 Nystagmus, aniridia, and cataracts that have been removed. Corrected vision is 20/200. Even if your distance vision can be corrected to the legal minimum, my understanding is that nystagmus is a no-go. I never even thought to try to drive a car with these sight factors. Unfortunately we'll need to wait for the autonomous cars.
Hey Liam, To answer your question, I did have the surgery and it went well. My right eye improved from 20/80 to 20/50 (so far - there may still be more improvement). My overall vision has gone from 20/30 to 20/25 and I don't have as much of a null point anymore. And I'm really close to getting my drivers license. I feel way more comfortable with it than I did before, so I would say it was successful
I have nystagmus, astigmatism and myopia . I was born with it and I've had two surgery's when I was a baby and right now I'm 13 . they say I can possibly drive but I thing they were trying to get my hopes up cause I've seen other people with similar situations and they can't drive . and I really don't like to be independent soo
+Katherine Callow I thought they can't do any surgery for that. Maybe your problem is related to a few nerves and muscles? Mine is light, but it seems that there are no medical solutions at all!Anyway I find it nice on a girl with such a cute face and smile :)
I have nystagmus and an astigmatism and I'm not driving right now - technically I could legally do it with glasses but glasses never really helped me. I'm actually getting surgery in a couple weeks that should totally correct the nystagmus. I'm hoping that after that I will feel more comfortable doing it. If you have any questions about the surgery I'm getting let me know - it's had some really promising results.
I meant do u see the world fully and properly? I mean read, write, play ,
watch tv etc with ur eyes? My son is only 5 months old. N he is diagnosed
with nystagmus. Congenital ofcourse. So i am very much worried and tensed
for him.:(
I can do many things and live a full life. See the second nystagmus video I made to see it under some conditions. As always, I am more than willing to talk to you more about this if you ever want. Best wishes.
I don't know what you mean by see properly, but yes?

Hi my nephew has had episodes like this for years now and i wanted to know
if unilateral hearing problems cause left or right beating nystagmus what
might be the cause of upbeating nystagmus?
Today I found out that I have intermittent nystagmus. Are there triggers
for this? I know certain things can trigger a person to have seizures. Is
this the same with us?

Congenital nystagmus
This is a condition where a persons eyes move back and forth. I don't know when they are moving I don't feel it I can still see straight I can NEVER drive because ...
I'm a sophomore in high school now, last year I met a guy named Josh, & I
couldn't understand why his eyes moved like that, Josh was 16 I was 15, he
was a sophomore but he looked like he was 13 and but he didn't go through
puberty yet, people would pick on him and he didn't have a lot of friends
so I stuck up for him and was it with him every time I saw him at lunch or
breakfast, I could tell he was very insecure by the way he talked and
presented himself, he would never answer anything seriously but I always
tried to stick up for him and make him feel comfortable, I would ask him
what his eyes are doing and why they move because I saw an episode on true
life on MTV with a guy who had congenital nystagmus, but just now after
looking it up and watching your video I understand it more. Coming into my
sophomore year I guess Josh left my school and I have no idea where he is
now but I wish I could see him again, and I will always stick up for people
with this.
Hey girl. Its awesome you did thos video! Very informative. My son was born
with nystagmus and he is almost 2 now. The opt. Said his vision appears to
be very well. He notices birds and planes even! They have done alot of
tests and only thing they have found was that in his brain, he has a little
more of the white substance on his brain rhan normal which could possibly
cause delays but dont know the cause. He does not seemed bothered by it so
far but I am worried for whats to come. However, your video has been VERY
helpful!!! Thank you for spreading your knowledge and sharing your
experiences, I think we all are very thankful :-) Keep you chin high and
good luck in college....dont know how old video is so you may be out of
college lol. Thanks again girl!!!
...and I thought I was the only one!!
Is it still flaws when I'm inlove with it :P?
I was born with nystagmus and no doctor have ever known why were my eyes
shaking until now which is stupid.
I just came by your video and this is my first time to know that i wasn't
the only one.
I never get jokes or stupid questions about my eyes, people around me
actually find it special since I'm the only one they've seen having it lol.
They often relate to anime which doesn't bother me much as I like anime xD!
I have nystagmis, if you feel you need someone to help you with some
situations with your son, hit me up. What I can tell you right now, is that
you have to understand how severe this condition is. What I mean is that
when He tells you "I can´t see it", don´t be surprised. We really have to
get up close to things to be able to see, but don´t worry. Personally, I
got my college degree last December, I have a job and I can travel by my
self. So don´t worry, just support and love your kid. Peace.
Thank you so much to for posting this. My son was born with congenital
nystagmus. He will be two in October. I feel like I have a million
questions. :) and I don't know where to begin. I've looked at so many you
tube videos, and this one has been very helpful for me. Do you get bullied?
I know what you mean about the million questions. I can't imagine what you
feel. I get asked by so many strangers if my son is okay etc. And that
breaks my heart. So I'm so afraid of what it will be like for him.
Hi, my name is Willis. Im 28 years old now with congenital nystagmus. I
live in Southern California, and have never been able to get a drivers
license. I have two kids. So not being able to drive and having two kids
living out here has made my life very difficult. I've researched eye muscle
surgery that may be able to correct my eyes enough to be able to drive. Its
a doctor in Ohio, Dr. Burnstine. Have you heard of it? If you have or have
any information, please post or e mail me willis836@gmail
My fiance and I had a baby on 6/14/2012 he is growing up and we noticed
shortly after birth his constant eye movement. We took him for his checkups
and the doctor said O he will grow out of it.And now at almost 9 months the
doctors are starting to be concerned. Anyway, what will life be like for
him? Anything you suggest to help him? I have noticed he likes screens
(computer and phones) and sometimes I wonder about his depth perception. (I
have cerebral palsy, so I kinda understand his life) ty
Thank you for making this video!! We are trying to figure out what's going
on with my four yr old daughter. Since birth she does have chronic sinus
problems and ear infections. She's had two sets of ear tubes she had her
sinuses flushed and adenoids removed. My husband and I have thought maybe
she has vision problems but not worried enough to get her formally
screened. For the last two months I've noticed the veg around naptime she
tells me she's dizzy. Then she sits up in her bed & either
Hello :) My Daughter was misdiagnosed with a degenerative eye disease as a
baby, For more than 15 years, we lived with the fact that our baby would
lose her sight. Great news this isnt going to happen! yet still cannot get
over those lost years of worry and unhappiness :( ... She is now 23, has a
slight nystagmus in her right eye. She has had 2x surgery to correct a
squint, One of my reasons for posting, was to ask if you or anyone reading,
had a head nod, to match their nystagmus, ?
the best advice I can give is don't be afraid to tell him to stand up for
himself. yes I got bullies throughout elementary and middleschool. another
thing is tell him that what ever help he is offered throught school, take
it, utilize it and don't be afraid to stand out. in FL they have a place
called DBS that gives me equiptment to help me see. I always am afraid of
what people will think if they see me use it and it prevents me from
helping myself. don't let him do that.
Hey Girl , I have congential nystagmus too , I see straight as you said and
I do not feel the movement I know it cannot be cured , sometimes I feel so
depressed because of people questions or reaction or the way they deal with
it , personally I accept myself because I know no one is perfect , I need
to make things larger to see them well but sometimes it embarrasses me !
does every one who has nystagmus can not drive? thank you for sharing this
video. It helps me a lot ,
Are you frickin' serious? They ask you if you're having a seizure?! In 30
years I've never had that! But wow. Good for you making this video, I
empathise and sympathise with the struggles you've faced having C.N. At
your age I wasn't even remotely as open about it as you. It's taken me a
long time and I'm still dealing with it, but a lot more confidently. Would
love to hear more from you. I made a video response to someone else's vid,
I'll send you the link.
I am sure if you asked a doctor they would know right away whether she does
or doesn't. Its pretty noticeable. I'm not sure if an MRI or CAT scan would
detect it. If her eyes are moving back and forth, and its often its a sign
that she might have nystagmus. And yes I get dizzy but that's usually at
the end of the day or if I have worked my eyes to hard. If you go to an
opthomologist they can tell you if she has it or not
I can do this voluntarily. I have a connective tissue disease, the
collagen is poorly made and makes the collagen very weak in ligaments,
tendons, and muscles. I can do this back and forth VERY FAR.....and fast.
It's been a party trick. I have some neurological issues in the cerebellum
as well. I am sorry you cannot drive, hope you are doing well, since this
is a 3 year old video. Take care ;o)
honestly, regardless of the fact that people are ignorant assholes and have
made me feel like such an outcast and loner ..i love the color of my eyes
it is the upside to my problem. i would sit in school and people would as
why my paper is so large and i used to try to explain to them why but now
it comes down to..."because i am more bad ass then you :)" its a great way
to get them to shut up lol.
Hi I have nystagmus and I was also born blind I had the correction surgery
in July have u had it how did u find the results I am also due to start new
drugs just after Xmas that will improve my far vision so fingers crossed on
me driving a question I always get is ( is everything moving for u ) and do
u find it restricts u in more then the not being able to drive
Sorry I pressed send to early! And I can't delete the previous comment,
sorry! But I have congenital nystagmus too, and was also born blind. But
I've had many surgeries over the years, and I just passed the eye test to
get my learned, although I can't drive at night. I've never known of anyone
else no has it so it's pretty cool to know I'm not alone, thank you!!!
I have the same problem and was born blind like you and then somehow was
able to see then had surgery to have the muscles tightened in my eyes. I've
worn really thick glasses my whole life and it seems to help my eyes to
focus. I even drive and it seems to help, I appreciate you posing this
video and being brave enough to share with us about your eyes.
there is only one surgeon in the world that can help with nystagmus and i
am not willing to risk losing my eyesight i have realized recently that my
eyes have gotten worse and i am starting to see things moving back and
forth and yeah i get annoyed that i cant drive it gets to me sometimes but
there are some advantages to having my eyes like this
Rolls her head around in circles or does the same circular motion from the
waist up. Her pupils look dilated & I have begun recording her eye
movements. The ENT said these episodes could be migraines or we could
sedate her for an MRI/CATScan. Would either of those detect congenital
nystagmus ? Do u experience dizziness?

hi I'm 37 year's old and I have nystagmus. Just got back from my eye doctor
today and I'm seriously thinking about getting my eyes aligned just wanted
to know would you highly suggest it are would you rather I did not
It depends on if you're comfortable with how your eyes are now. I wasn't comfortable and wanted my eyes to align and not shake so much. It was beneficial to me. :)
Hello,
I was born with Nystagmus. I'm 29 years old and my career goals were always
to become a meteorologist on TV, however with the nystagmus present took a
toll on my vision towards the prompter. My nystagmus is not that bad,
however you can see my eyes move right/left if you look me close enough.
99% of my friends never really knew, only a couple of people noticed my
nystagmus.
Last Tuesday I decided to get a surgery (muscle surgery) (i'm still
following my dreams to become a met on TV). My doctor performed a surgery
only on my left eye, that was upon his decision to do one eye at a time.
I'm not really sure how this works but I went with his decisions. Im still
recovering with the redness and itchy/uncomfortableness in my eye. After
the surgery I noticed a drastic change in my eye, it stabilized
significantly, however now day 9 it varies. My nystagmus seems to have
returned a bit. Supposedly the recovery time can vary from several weeks to
several months for noticeable change.
I'm expected to get the second surgery done in June. I'll keep everyone
posted over the next several months how everything evolves. I hope there
are some folks in this group that have had the surgery. I'd like to hear
about your results.
I think the reason you've been having problems is that you are fairly
young, and still developing. So my doctors in Germany recommended to wait
until i'm a full adult. Just my opinion, however you look really good... :)
It's not noticeable.. Good luck to you!
Thanks,
Ajdin-Aiden Kljajic
+KljajicAjdin I haven't heard of doing one eye at a time, but the last two surgeries were done by the same surgeon. I am not happy with my last surgery, my left eye is a different size and shape from my right one now. Makeup is a pain in the butt to apply since each eye is different, but I know since you're a guy that aspect doesn't matter. My left eye wanders more because I can't see out of it so I can't control it. When I had my third eye surgery (I was 15) I was so unbelievably happy! They looked the tiniest bit cross eyed at first because they were healing. I can't remember how long they took to heal, but that is when I felt the most "normal." Eventually they started becoming worse and I had to get the surgery on my left eye. It's five years later since the last one, and I can tell I want another one. I don't think will happen since it's "cosmetic." I hope your surgery goes well, and I'd love to hear about your story. Thank you for your comment!
+brandon tillman Thank you, that's very nice of you!
