+Amazing Planet The peregrine falcon only reaches that speed when it's diving. While its diving speed is incredible, its flying speed isn't as remarkable. In my opinion diving speeds don't count for the "fastest bird". It should be based on how much distance they can cover in how much time, not how fast they can fall out of the sky. The white throated needle tail kicks peregrine ass with 169km/h horizontal speed versus 112km/h.

+Dee H. I used the same data because what Benjamin Filbert was referring to was using gravity to assist in acceleration of speed while the swift does not.  Even thought he swift 'shows off' their speed for courtship displays, they don't use gravity to assist because their fast speed is recorded even when climbing in altitude.

The Heningsson study 2010, which suggests speeds of 69 mph for swifts, referred to courtship displays. These displays ,like the falcon's stoop, have elements of acceleration aided by gravity. So if a falcon's level flight speed (40 -45 mph) is to be considered, then the swift's level flight speed (22 -24 mph) must also be used in comparison.What is your evaluation of the relevant data?
