Man this scene is a perfect way to reach the climax of the movie letting Billy Beane Know that he Hit a Home Run even thou he lost for the second Consecutive year & because of it everyone in Major League Baseball started to follow what he has done to his organization with little money to spent on players & using a different method to win games that no one even bothered to try

I tear up at this scene, too, as I just rewatched Moneyball on TV. It's not only because he didn't realize he'd hit a HR. It's the players on the opposing team congratulating him and letting him share his glory of the moment. And THAT, wearethechamps9486, makes them quite the opposite of what you said.

The reason they are laughing at him is because he hit a homerun and he didn't even know it. He was so caught up with getting down the baseline, that he didn't noticed he jacked the ball. That's what made it funny. You can bet if this did happen, he was laughing at himself.
