The Supreme Court struck down 1 small provision.
The Voting Rights Act is intact, except for that one small part.
Congress can fix the part that was struck down.
Contact your Congressman.
+George Howell You nitpicked my comment instead of taking the time to read and understand what I was talking about. Your reply was off the mark, that's all.
+Abe Tuaone I commented on the headline, and that comment is correct.I replied to your question about a separate ID card, and my answer is correct to the best of my knowledge.I will not comment again.
+George Howell Therein lies the problem. You're forming your argument based on the headline. The sad part is, you're so long winded, given that you're arguing from an ignorant position.
+Abe Tuaone I don't see this discussion as an argument.I read the headline that says "Voting Rights Act of 1965 Struck Down By The Supreme Court". That headline is wrong. I commented on that headline, and I stand by my comment of 6 months ago.Regarding "the separate ID card mandates" and your question "Why mandate a separate ID card?", I say again:Every state has separate voter ID laws. I know only about my state. My state does not have a "separate ID card mandate".Because the incorrect headline and the video came from the same guy, I chose to ignore the video. I continue that choice.
+George Howell Of course the video talked about a lot of different things but I was talking specifically about the part about the separate ID card mandates.I'm not surprised you didn't watch the whole video because you obviously argued from a position of ignorance.
+Abe Tuaone By "this", if you mean the video here, he's talking about a lot of stuff. I heard what he said about the Supreme Court in 2013 overturning the Voting Rights Act and he's wrong. I did not listen to all of it. If he says some state is mandating a separate ID card, I do not know about all states.I do know that my state changed the voter ID requirements in a 2011 law that became effective in 2014.For voter ID, my state allows any of the forms of ID I listed above.
+Abe Tuaone Requirements vary from state to state. The law in my state does not mandate only a separate ID card. Any one of these forms of ID are valid in my state:Valid Driver's LicenseValid Nondriver IDValid Photo Voter ID cardValid State Issued ID (any other state)Valid Federal Issued IDValid US PassportValid Employee ID from Federal Government, State, County, Municipality, Board, or other entity of this stateValid student or employee ID from a public or private college or university in the state (including postgraduate technical or professional schools)Valid Military IDValid Tribal ID
They didn't strike down the VRA they overturned a provision that allowed
the federal gov't to control how elections are conducted in those states.
The intent was to ensure minorities would be able to register and
participate in elections. The data shows that blacks in those states have
as high of a voter participation than states who weren't subject to it.
Also there are other southern states who weren't covered by the law and
they have similar numbers of participation and they were some of the states
who had huge issues with desegregation. If the crisis still existed it
would have showed up there and it didn't. Blacks can vote wherever they
live.
Voting rights are protected already. Nothing is changing in that regard.
There was a time when this was necessary but that ain't today. Yet if this
kind of law is necessary it should affect all the states equally. That is
why the act as it was written is unconstitutional. If people are truly
concerned they should have congress pass a law that covers all states.
Don't let the media jerk your chain so much.
Now if you really want to get into an issue that truly
disenfranchises certain communities, examine how difficult it can be to
restore voting rights to someone who has a felony conviction. There is a
clear cut example of the gov't making it harder for some communities to
vote.
When obama was given the Nobel Peace prize, I was almost worried that they
had not lived up to their bullshit reputation of celebrating charlatans
like mother teresa. Now I know that they in fact did ! Hope and change
..indeed (Dubya would be like ... oh daddy'o,... I wanted to do That ! )
Listen folks, All they have to do now is pass a bill that allows the
military to direct domestic law enforcement as their agent.....to assist
them... Absolutely terrorfying! 1984 + 300,000,000 = 1776
Just an interesting note about inflation: In late 2009 I was paying $1.59 a
pound for chuck steak (99 cents on sale) and $1. 49 for 10 pounds of
potatoes. It's 4/20/12. I just got back from the grocery store. Chuck steak
: $5.29 a pound Potatoes: $6.97 for 10 pounds The "government" tells me
there's no inflation. This is going to get much MUCH worse and at an
accelerated rate.
