Singapore commemorates 70th anniversary of end of WWII
Singapore's National Heritage Board on Thursday organized a ceremony at the same City Hall Chamber where the 1945 surrender ceremony in Singapore took ...
It's unfortunate that the MRNVR (Singapore Division) was not remembered. In
1941, 3 HDMLs commanded by MRNVR Officers & manned by Ratings made attacks
at Japanese troops crossing in boats the Johor Straits into Singapore
Island. Also, during the evacuation of Singapore, 120 Malay Ratings
of MRNVR (Malayan RN Volunteer Reserve - Singapore Division) died as their
vessels were sunk by Japanese Cruisers off Bangka Straits (Riau
Archipelago). These episodes were included in the book I edited "Naval
Reservists in Action: WW II (Far East) & Confrontation (1963-1966)"
launched last year, and distributed in Kuala Lumpur & Singapore. Royalties
from book sales donated to Naval Charities in UK and Malaysia. We shall
remember them: our MRNVR (Singapore Division) & its successor the RMNVR, of
which I am proud to be a Confrontation Veteran defending Malaysia including
Singapore, with the British with Aussies & Kiwis playing major defence
roles.
