That's a reason why this doesn't make sense. Knuckles didn't exist in the first game, so Sonic couldn't have been a hallucination.

If the sonic universe takes place in his head then why isn't he in sonic 1?

Any game AFTER Sonic Adventure 2 should not be considered in this theory as Sonic Adventure 2 was meant to be the last game in the series. As for Sonic 1 or 2, I don't know.

Whether or not you believe the actual conspiracy that they're planning to
do this to the public on purpose (for control or whatever), the point is
that the level of science and technology has evolved to a point that it may
be beyond human control. I came to this video because apparently a little
while ago a very dangerous virus went 'missing' from the institute in Texas
where they keep most of the known virus and vaccines locked up.
