Hi Megan! I have a question. When you say the hedgehog is grumpy, what
exactly do you mean? How does he demonstrate being grumpy? Does he bite, or
growl, or what? Just curious.
Thanks!
He gets grumpy when I wake him up and he does not want to wake up! He shows he is grumpy by hissing and flexing his quills, and trust me when they are flexed they can hurt! LOL But he doesn't get grumpy that much with me anyone - they are usually a one person animals....so the more I hold him and interact with him the less likely he is to be grumpy and flex his quills with me! Megan
+Jess Lucero When he gets angry or feels like he is in danger and he sticks them out they hurt but when he is calm and they are laying down they are soft! LOL Make sense? Megan
+Kristi Shiver Cool you have a Hedgehog! How old is yours? Megan

Henry our new Hedgehog
Presenting Henry the newest addition to the zoo. He is the cutest little bugger ever. Here he is playing with us and getting stuck in the paper towel holder, what a ...
We feed it a well balanced Hedgehog food, although they can be fed a high
quality cat food. Now they are insectivores so they absolutely love bugs.
For treats he gets crickets, meal worms all purchased at a pet store. He
likes fruits, vegetables, they can have unseasoned chicken, tuna, salmon.
They only things the do not recommend to give them are dairy products as
they cause upsets stomachs. Hope this helps. Nope these little animals are
in a class themselves and are not rodents.
Our Hedgie lives in a guinea pig cage with Alpine shavings. They have been
known to train on cat litter as well, although ours uses his water bowel
(Yuk), but at least he goes there after he drinks and it's easier to
collect then all over the place. They really are ideal pets and are so
silly when they play, very curious and an easy pet to maintain. Unlike the
gerbils/hamsters they are not known for nipping but if you taste good they
will lick you to death, LOL.
Thanks for putting the family name up in the tags! I went right to the
Wikki article and was shocked to see they are not even remotely related to
the rodentia, despite their appearance. The lack of a tail really threw me
off. The article says they are insect and worm eaters. Do you have to feed
it crickets or worms from the pet store? Or will he eat regular old gerbil
feed and/or seeds. Lettuce/carrots? Is he spiny or furry? He is a very cute
pet!!!
@jh1313luv I would hold it as often as you can. when you put it to rest in
its cage I could have something that has your scent on it. It helps a hole
lot they get used to your smell and the more you hold it the more confident
the hedgie will feel and won't feel so threatened to throw his quills out.
BTW, there if you ever want to see them there is a lady in Chicago who
sells them she is on the web and her site is Hedgehogs by Vicki. Take care,
stay warm!
