My explanation why the archer moved into combat because of the way the game moves units according to each of their individual vision instead of the shared vison the players get. This is probably to avoid problems with battles between multiple hostile parties. For example, if you interfere in a battle between some bandits and a huntingpack, it'd be kinda crappy if the werewoles knew the postion of your archers and how to pin them down, because a thug on the other side of the map spotted them. Alternatively i've seen some goblin archers move into meele during night battles, because the accepted shooting without nightvision is futile. Maybe bandits to that too.
