We needed to add lighting to the chicken coop. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to demonstrate how easy it is to set up a solar system, using a ...
+WORM GITTER Yes, the extra lighting kept them laying pretty regularly. Out of eighteen hens, we were getting between 12 to 14 eggs a day. However, now, with this cold snap and overcast days for three weeks (give or take the odd sunny day in between), production has slowed down to about half of that.Hopefully the forecasters are correct and we'll be getting some sunnier, warmer weather again.
+Jim H. Hi, Jim. Thank you for commenting! Yes, going solar can be a huge investment. It all depends on your goals (what you want to use solar for) and lifestyle. We approached things a little differently, so it wouldn't cost us an "arm and a leg". When we started looking to buy property, we had an idea that we'd be building something small(er) and wanted to be less dependent on the grid. So, we started buying components as we could afford them; a panel here and a panel there, and we did a lot of shopping around. Any new appliances we purchased were chosen with the idea that we'd be running them off of solar. And, we trained ourselves to do without a few conveniences and do things with a little more elbow grease to save on power requirements, as well (like our cloths washer and dryer). When we moved out here, we started with a small battery bank which can power most of what we use today. We'll be expanding that battery bank for the winter. So, as I see it, the cost of solar really depends on one's approach to it and their goals.
+Aaron Davis Homesteading You're welcome, Aaron! Glad you liked it. The only other function building we have right now is our storage container and it doesn't have power running to it. I suppose if you consider the four season RV as a building, it now only has grid power (as we moved the solar system over to the cabin), but we're only using it for storage now. It's been shut down for the winter.
I think the same child in China makes most of those kits and they slap
different labels on them LOL. Mine came from Harbour Freight in the US last
winter. Once I pay for something the cost is out of mind so I'm no longer
sure what I paid. Mine is only three 15 watt panels so likely in the $200
US range and the inverter wasn't included in the kit. It came with two 12
volt CFL lights though. I don't like CFL so I bought LED 12 volt bulbs and
that works great. Your panels and frame look identical to mine except for
the wattage of course. Are you at all concerned about the wind blowing it
around or it getting snow covered in the winter. Here we have so much wind
if I hadn't anchored it into the ground it would be in a tree top before
spring LOL. Also if we had another winter like last winter it would be
under several feet of snow. It was an exceptional winter though. You might
want to look into a heated water fountain they are thermostatically
controlled so only come on when needed and I have two that never freeze. I
just checked and mine are 100 W, 120 V, 60 Hz .
+Dale Calder Hi, Dale. The only problem we have with wind is if something is too high or out in the open. All of my solar panels out here are on the ground and have some building as support/shelter. So, it's been okay, so far. These panels, as you saw in the video, are up against the coop and are pretty heavy, so I think they'll be okay. I think the prairie grasses has some effect on the wind out here. It seems to help keep the wind from getting under things, if they are low to the ground. We also have our wind breaks protecting the tiny house and "compound", which helps greatly. Can't say too much about the snow out here. Last winter was our first winter out on the homestead and it was fairly mild. So, keeping our panels clear wasn't too big of a chore. That's a great tip, about the water heaters. I'm sure Peavy Mart would have something like that. We will look into them. Our friends, who traded us the chickens, says that they just have a single heat lamp in their coop, over the water, and it's enough to keep both the water and the chickens from freezing. Ha!
Thats was a really useful and informative video, and great to see how
you're deploying solar. It's also sparked a couple of thoughts for me that
I'll look to see if I can take further. Thanks for sharing.
+Alan Williams Hi, Alan. You're most welcome and thank you for your comment and for watching! I'm very glad that you've found this video to be helpful in some way. What ever you are thinking of doing, I hope you can post a video about it. I really enjoy seeing how other people are using solar power and what they use.Cheers!David.
