Traingamer15 The F40-2s that went out earlier this year won't return until this coming Spring, late May or early June I think. After they return, the rest will go out, and then more of the F40PHM-2s will be sent out.
Traingamer15 The switch to the new paint scheme is part of the rehabilitation process. The new colors may be one of the final things given to the locomotives before they are returned to Metra
BaronessAnn Davenport I will too, but do you know when they are being repainted? 174-184 are not repainted yet, are they? Or are they even finished yet?
Traingamer15 They are going to rebuild 210 and the rest of the F40PHM-2s thankfully. The rebuild program has started, but the F40PHs 174-184 are getting rebuilt before the F40PHM-2s
TheIllinoisTornado I often see UP locomotives parked next to the Metra locomotives in the Waukegan Yard. I saw the 130 outside my window yesterday morning.
BaronessAnn Davenport Yep. Just saw UP 5828 which is an AC4400CW parked at Waukegan last week. Beautiful looking engine. I tend to take pictures of the trains more than videos. And you're most welcome about 210. I got a favorite engine myself. Old METX 130 is mine. I've seen that one many times running on the Harvard Sub near me and I love the sound of its P5.
TheIllinoisTornado The AC4400s are great locomotives indeed. Many of them are approaching 20 years of service. And thank you for realizing the value 210 has in my life. It's an extremely long story of why it means so much to me.
BaronessAnn Davenport yea the old EMDs were the best. Although in recent years GE has done a really good job too with their GEVOs and AC4400CWs. METX 210 seems to have a lot of sentimental value to you. It's a good locomotive.
BaronessAnn Davenport my guess would be either at Western Avenue or the Rocket House (probably the rocket house since all the major engine work is done there). I will say that Metra made the right choice rebuilding their locomotives instead of purchasing new ones because a lot of other agencies across the U.S. got new ones and they got a lot of problems. No new locomotive will ever operate as well as EMD built 30 or more years ago. MBTA out of Boston just got a new fleet of HSP46s from MPI and many of them had traction motor failures right after they entered service.
TheIllinoisTornado I heard that the F40PH-3s are no longer problematic because they've received some modifications. At which Metra facility I'm unsure.
METX210 yea the Mayfield facility didn't do such a good job with the rebuilds. I think they just need to be broken into a little bit and have some modifications like the MP36s and they will operate perfectly. The MP36s had numerous issues when they were first delivered to Metra and now that they modified them at the Rocket House, they run a lot better.
TheIllinoisTornado I think the Lightning scheme will look great on the F40s as well. I did not know 174 had any nose damage, but it's great to hear that its rehabilitation is progressing normally. I think the people at the Georgia Progress Rail facility will do a much better job on the F40 rebuilds than those at the Kentucky facility.
METX210 You are most welcome. That will be interesting to see the F40s in the Lightning paint scheme if that's the case. I wonder if 174 through 178 will still be assigned to UP once they are rebuilt. 174 looked to be in the worst of shape of those five UP engines and had nose damage due to a collision. Last I heard, it's been gutted down to the frame at Progress Rail (I saw pictures of it on a presentation given by their Chief Mechanical Officer).
TheIllinoisTornado This is great news indeed. Thank you very much for the information and clarification. I discovered this morning that the F40PH-2s, and maybe also the F40PHM-2s, will be repainted in the MP36PH paint scheme at the Patterson GA Progress Rail facility. When I discovered that, it came as a shocker to me, because it wasn't something I expected.
METX210 174, 175, 183, 184 and 194 are all at Progress Rail in Patterson, GA getting rebuilt. 194 was sent in early because of the fire it had a couple of months back. Not sure when 210 will be rebuilt however that one for certain is in the books for being rebuilt (all the 1989 F40s as well as the Winnebagos including 210 are getting rebuilt and will be in service for many years to come). They haven't had a major overhaul in like 15 years and are long overdue. It will be interesting to see how well they will perform since the Patterson facility is doing the rebuilds this time instead of Mayfield, KY.
