I get most of my furniture from private Japanese rubbish to this day. I got
my first three bicycles from dumps. But remember it is illegal to take
rubbish from most dumps. One can in some cases get permission, in the case
of bicycles at least, if one takes the trashed bicycle directly to the
police and ask them to contact the owner (assuming that the bicycle has the
compulsory bicycle registration number) who will then usually give you the
bike. I did not know this and got shopped twice.

Very interesting! We have a similar superstition about not picking
up/bringing home items you come across outside during the Hungry Ghost
Festival, as bad spirits may dwell in it. When items are dumped at the
junkyard, do they then belong to someone or any organization? It looks like
someone arranged everything neatly. Or can anyone just pick off stuff they
need from there?

I think that if you lived in the area, getting concerned people together to
show the council who's boss would be easier. But you might still be able to
do this via the internet. For instance, you could get a letter writing
campaign started; say, ask the council to put up garbage cans along that
beach and collect it once a month.

I think it's really the same everywhere, but I think it starts with the
people. If people come together, the media will take notice, which will
cause more people to join the cause, and eventually there should be enough
pressure to cause change. It all starts with a few people (or even one
