Part one of my Ancient History documentary on Augustus. This part basicly gives an overview of his life before making judgements on his reign. Some classical ...
You forget that Caesarion was Caesar's son AS WELL AS Cleopatra's son. The
Roman people and especially the senate would never have allowed for someone
who was not a roman citizen to rule. Especially considering how much they
disliked and distrusted Cleopatra. Caesar was all fine with flipping off
the senate as we well know, but it was in his best interest to stick to
tradition and make his roman nephew the sole beneficiary in his will. heres
a good example; Look at what happened to Mark Antony!
Mark Antony besieged Decimus Brutus one of caesar's assassins at Mutina to
avenge caesar & thats what he did. You have to keep in mind Antony deserved
much more position & glory than the virgin octavian. I'm a huge fan of
Romans but i find Augustus a poilitical backstabber. There is great doubt
to my mind that Caesar would will all his power to great nephew octavian
whom he knew barely knew & not his own son Caesarion or other relatives who
served with him on his campagins.
Wrong. Did caesar stick to tradition when he crossed the rubicon or when he
filled the senate ranks with barbarians? did caesar stick to traditions
when he became DICTATOR FOR LIFE? no.. Had his life not been cut short he
would have became first official emperor for damn sure. He brought queen
cleopatra to rome even tho romans did not like it, they had a son, and i'm
sure he planned for his future as any other ruler would. Antony was great
but Caesar was far greater.
Augustus was a political genius not a brave soldier/general, he never
fought in battles as true romans did, but always sent his men under other
general's command. At Philippi his camp got sacked, his eagles lost, his
legions routed cos he went hiding in the marsh claiming he's ill. Marcus
Agrippa deserves the title of Hero, Augustus is more of a Political genius
than hero. But great vid anyway :)
This is very good. I enjoyed part two, and how you analysed Augustus'
shrewd manipulation of the plebians. In my opinion, he held power for three
reasons: the mob, the army and his wealth. With all three, any emperor can
rule well. Look at Domitian and Claudius, for example. But great
documentary!
well we are all aware caesar layed out a VERY nice path for octavian to
take over and carry onto imperialism. i mean caesar was already dictator
for life.... he was an emperor, just it wasnt called that! not to mention
the rules were quite a bit different ! 5
No doubt about it Augustus was a badass leader, good or bad there is no
doubt he was the first real emperor and had absolute power in rome. He was
a genius.
The Roman civil war, that pitted the military power of Julius Caesar against the Senatorial power of Pompey, resulted in the transformation of Roman government ...
Great video! Way more interesting than Toby Chatburn (lives in Chorley,
Lancashire)...
Augustus Caesar 10 min. Film
Biography Project for English. Augustus Caesar. Narrated by myself. There is no way for me to fully describe Augustus Caesar in the ten minutes or so that I was ...
This was very good. I enjoyed it. I understand that the video was a
little fuzzy - it was a good effect. I will try it with my 6th graders.
The narration is very clear.

+Original Narrator non est sed imperator sedens in magnanimitate estit isnt a mummer. that was the use about emperors. He declares war with just One word or gesture without any freaking out
+MrRamram720 The thing about suggestion laws in Rome is that if you were adopted it is the same thing as being natural born son to someone. When Octavian (Augustus) was named Caesar's son and sole heir to the Caesarian party Octavian was called Caesar since he was his son by law.
Friends! Romans! Countrymen! Greetings: 'The Caesars' is essential viewing for all fans of Roman history. It pre-dates the BBC's 'I, Claudius' by eight years.
+Brandon Hernandez The legend is that he did this once a year, and donated the money he had acquired. A later scene might explain a bit more when Claudius tries to give money after the day and Augustus refuses.
+William Wright His father pushed into obscurity and an early death, his only son killed, ordered by Augustus to leave the woman he loved and marry that horrible woman Julia. What do you think?
+William Wright I'm led to believe that it was the death of his son Drusus that caused his depression. His mood before this event is unknown, but general opinion in the ancient world was of a gloomy man. If you look at his personal history, it is one of alienation of his own blood line, which was important to Roman nobles. His father was cast aside to make way for Augusus. Tiberius, a Claudian, then lives in the shadow of the Julians. Internal plots kill Drusus. After this is proven by Livilla's admission it is assumed he descends to the madmen depicted at Capri in various films, but personally I'm more inclined to believe he was just morose due to an intense political life since his earliest days (he gave the euology at his father's funeral when he was 9), and a concerted effort to dominate or wipe out any strong males in both Julian and Claudian lines of the imperial family, which historical legend blames his own mother for. Still, maybe he enjoyed a good laugh now and then.As for depictions here and in I·Claudius, it's much more fiction than reality and here it is done for professional theatrical respect, whatever that meant in the late '60s and today.
Thank you so much for uploading this fantastic series! You mentioned that a
high quality colour version exists - could you tell us where viewers could
purchase or download such a version, if possible?
+Stephen Prince Yes. Tommy Lee's natural gravitas would certainly take some beating.I'm still unsure who could play the crazed Caligula? And, to be perfectly honest, I found Freddy Jone's 'Claudius' a bit wrong(but I never thought Derek Jacobi's version was particularly good, either).
Hi, El Grando!I like your choice of modern actors for a potential remake of this classic series, especially Gabrielle Byrne for the part of Tiberius. The only altenative for this part I could think of was Tommy Lee Jones (as an elder Tiberius). Same type of dry, stoic character, I think.
+Stephen Prince Hi Stephen. I also love this series.IF there was going to be a remake, which actor do you think could stand a chance of playing Tiberius to the same standard as Andre Morrell ???Which other modern actors do you think would suit the project (playing which characters) ???Gabrielle Byrne - TiberiusDaniel Craig - Germanicus Michelle Dockery - Agrippina Daniel Day Lewis - SejanusLian Neeson - Calpurnius PisoLindsey Duncan - PlancinaDamien Lewis - MacroDominick West - ClaudiusKatherine Kelly - LivillaChristopher Plummer - AugustusMaggie Smith - LiviaToby Jones - CrispusThrasyllus - Jim Carter
Thanks, Robin, for providing the information I requested. What a pity the producers only filmed the series in B/W - the stage scenery and costumes must have been quite impressive in colour. Nevertheless, thanks again for uploading the series, which despite what other viewers may think (judging by their comments!), I think is just as good as "I, Claudius", especially pertaining to how Tiberius is portrayed in "Caesars" - excellent study of character and acting!
+Stephen Prince Unfortunately I was referring only to colour photographs which were printed at the time, probably to promote the show. The costumes and sets look bright, varied and clean, so it's a shame they only filmed it in B&W.
I thought the actor playing Thrasyllus here played the same role in
I,Claudius also! He has a very distinctive voice! Apparently his name is
Kevin Stoney...don't think I have seen him in much except I Claudius...but
its interesting how differently he plays the same role...here his
Thrasyllus seems to have a lot more dignity than in I, Claudius, where he
appears as something of a bumbler and sycophant. Also...although I like him
generally, Freddie Jone's Claudius is absolutely terrible here! And people
go on about Derek Jacobi being over the top!
