Antifragile - Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Radical philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb offers a blueprint for how to live - and thrive - in a world we don't understand, and which is too uncertain for us to ...
I really don't see anything particularly novel about this idea of
antifragility except clever marketing of a specific term. This idea seems
well summed up by old familiar homilies such as: whatever doesn't kill you
makes you stronger..... If life gives you a lemon, make lemonade..... the
bigger they are, they harder they fall. etc... So kudos for Taleb's
entrepreneurial spirit but I take this idea as something new with a grain
of salt but maybe he doesn't intend that, it's just a very complex reminder
of simple (forgotten? under siege?) truths; after all the founding fathers
had this idea long ago with federalism.
+Rex Edgmon The insightful aspect of Taleb's work is its coherence and how he defines arenas for applicability. I'm not sure the same could be said for a serious of aphorisms.
Typically, critics of NNT respond with personal attacks or straw men,
rather than address his points (with some notable exceptions, such as
Marcus Avelino below). This suggests that they are unable to refute his
points and thus adds credibility. English is not his first language, but he
communicates well enough in English for the truly interested to understand.
His imperfect English provides the accidental benefit of weeding out those
with only casual interest. Besides, his English is infinitely better than
my Lebanese (Levantine Aramaic/Arabic), so I am in no position to critcize.
+Kyle Becker Good points, and he has even added some new words to the English language. His curmudgeonliness also contributes to the beneficial weeding-out function. :)
+fuzzwarmy Not to mention his English vocabulary is ridiculously huge. While reading his books I have to constantly google the words he uses. He can be a bit of a jerk though. Which is fine. It's probably needed.
Ele é um homem brilhante. Meu principal mentor, porém não entendo um
detalhe. Vejo alguns videos do Nassim e percebo o quanto ele parece
+Marcus Avelino Sorry, I don't know Portugese at all, so I won't attempt it for now. Yes, I have also noticed what you did. I ignore his advice on carbs, which is one of the rare things I think NNT gets mostly wrong. His point about religious fasts is credible, though I wonder how much he actually adheres to it. :) I would balance Prof. De Vany's dietary advice with that of Prof. Ray Peat, Prof. Chris Masterjohn, Prof. Fred Kummerow, Prof. Stephan Guyenet, Dr. Boyd Eaton, and Prof. Staffan Lindeberg, all of whom are slimmer than NNT. :)
There is a word for something or someone who benefits from volatility or
chaos - you could call it 'Agile' rather than Antifragile. An organisation
that is Agile can put in place approaches that enable it to develop
responses that gain from mistakes / errors / volatility.
+Andy Marko in boxing you train to avoid a punch - Agile...and you also train to take a punch - antifragile....because no matter what you do there is a possibility you might still be caught in the blindside and receive a punch - black swan....
Nassim Taleb makes some good points, but is overrated. I am mathematically
critiquing his definition and normative use of Antifragility. It is an
imcomplete justification, empty and dependent on context.
