Frederick is were my home base use to be, I know a plenty of history there.
That street trackage was where I saw my first real train. 2 Chessie GP9's
and a caboose (the predecessor to CSX D786) bringing covered hoppers from
the OML to the mill in Walkersville. My grandma use to tell me stories
about the steam engines bringing passengers into downtown from
Philadelphia. I do imagine what a train would look like rolling down east
street today. The trackage is still there.
That wye has been there as long as I've been visiting (since the early
1980s)-but I too never saw a train diverge onto it! I've got many shots
from the 80s showing a rusty wye-and Frederick Branch! Want more FYI? The
Frederick branch once continued into town via street trackage, and
connected with what's now Maryland Midland-then PRR! Wouldn't it be great
if that connection still existed? Trains straight to New York once departed
Frederick!
Yeah, sure. No rush, these things will be around for a while. The EMDs are
my priority. But if you come down (I doubt you ever will), be sure to let
me know.
