Pulsars, Magnetars, Black Holes (Oh My!): The Wickedly Cool Stellar Undead
The biggest stars burn the fastest and brightest, and when they die, they do so spectacularly, exploding as supernovae and leaving behind some of the most ...
Yes, well done. But I have a problem with the whole concept of a neutron
star. The magnetic field has to be created due to the rapid axial rotation
and some charged particles within the star (I guess the star is not only
neutrons). Now oh the axis is looking at Earth we should see continuous
emission of x rays, light, or other electromagnetic radiation. To
experience lighthouse effect, the magnetic pole must be offset, or we see
the axis during precession. Precession is much slower compared to the
orbital speed, which would make the stuff at the equator approach, or even
exceed the speed of light. And that would destroy the theory of neutron
stars. Are there other theories out there?
+tomahawkskipper Orbital speed? What has that got to do with your point? Do you mean the rotational speed of the neutron star rather than 'orbital speed'? The greatest calculated speed of the matter at the surface of observed pulsars is 0.15 c [15% the speed of light] at the stars equator. This whole part of your post doesn't read well - can you explain it better? "Precession is much slower compared to the orbital speed, which would make the stuff at the equator approach, or even exceed the speed of light. And that would destroy the theory of neutron stars. Are there other theories out there?"
With amateur telescopes, there's a number of white dwarfs that can be seen,
including Sirius B. I've seen several of these stellar corpses over the
years, with Sirius B being the toughest. It took repeated attempts with a
10 and then a 15-inch telescope to eventually reveal Sirius B, which has
the mass of the Sun crammed into a sphere smaller than the Earth. There's
also a few supernovae remnants that can be seen through amateur telescopes
too, although there's no way to see the neutron star or black hole formed
during the death of the star that died there as a supernova. As for the
lecture, I enjoyed it very much. Dr. Ransom did a great job explaining
complex physics in a way the public can understand.
+draco6543 i have not yet. i dont have a formal astronomy background and i tend to be a bit people shy. not afraid to admit it lol. but i think its something i will look into now. it really interest me. i feel its my calling in life. thanks for responce friend.
nicely said. wish i had friends like you man. im 27 and my peers want to get drunk at bars, i wanna look through telescopes and nerd out on distant stars on weekends.
I fully appreciate your intellect, knowledge of your chosen profession, and
for sharing your discoveries of the universe we live in with the rest of
us. Spectacular, indeed.
However, I encourage you to seriously rethink your decision to discount the
existence of a Creator of it all. This is far too grave of a choice to
dismiss out of hand.
+Wesley Lindemulder It's not a matter of discounting something. It's a matter of evidence, of which there is none. There is no choice for a true scientist. Faith is required to believe a creator exists, just as faith is required to believe that no creator exists, and faith is the complete inverse of science. A scientific approach to this question necessarily results in agnostic atheism. What's more, any suggestion that this question should be approached differently to any other factual question requires an assumption of our conclusion, and must therefore be discarded.
+ZDson3112 LOL, an opinion piece by a hack who also denies that smoking causes cancer and supports "intelligent design" is evidence. Got it.That "Climategate" crap is debunked, the results were replicated and multiple ethics committees have found no evidence of fraud. The existence of anthropogenic global warming is the overwhelming scientific consensus, deal with it.
+TheGodlessGuitarist Do tell what propaganda? Here's the NAOO raw data charts. https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2014/06/23/noaanasa-dramatically-altered-us-temperatures-after-the-year-2000/And here's the reports on the IPCC(That's in UN's climate researchers btw) faking all their data. 1: //www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/6679082/Climate-change-this-is-the-worst-scientific-scandal-of-our-generation.html2: //wattsupwiththat.com/2010/01/23/breaking-news-scientist-admits-ipcc-used-fake-data-to-pressure-policy-makers/and 3: //www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/globalwarming/11395516/The-fiddling-with-temperature-data-is-the-biggest-science-scandal-ever.htmlThere's my evidence, what've you got?
+ZDson3112I'm not talking about pollution, I'm talking about propaganda being pumped out by these oil corporations, propaganda willfully picked up and propagated by people like you.
+TheGodlessGuitarist I didn't say that pollution wasn't a thing, only that man-made global warming as it is currently put forward has no verifiable evidence to support it,Now in all honesty Exon and the Koch brothers aren't the ones pumping out pollution and smog, that'd be India and China. Air quality sensors in Beijing just recently were literally maxed out because the people who made them didn't think it was possible for air pollution levels to reach even half the level they did.If pollution is what you're worried about than your enemies are all the 2nd world countries using coal burning plants w/o any filtration systems.
+TheGodlessGuitaristOnly scientifically ignorant fools actually buy into man made warming at this point.According to all relevant data the earth hasn't warmed since roughly the 80's, and to date proponents of man-made global warming haven't been able to make a single correct prediction. Not to mention that the IPCC and most recently NAOO have been caught using falsified data over real world data in order to get their models to show ANY level of warming...
+macsporanYou do realize bashing religious people shows the lowest level of intelligence and sneering at religion is juvenile, and symptomatic of a stunted imagination. There's no difference between a self righteous theist and a self righteous atheist, both are equally reprehensible.
