I know I'm a musician, but sometimes I like to show the world how I live when not singing... I hunt, fish, and live off the land as much as possible. We eat our ...
im sorry but this is so weak .... just build a coop with insulating
materials .... what are you doing when its -20 without the snow ? ... just
do it right the first time.
+Anar Chy actually.. we have had chickens in this coop very comfortable for 4 years. We have never had any die or get frost bite from the cold. The size of the coop helps keep them warm. In the summer they run free until the evening. And all our chickens lay eggs all year round. Way more successful then birds kept in large keeps that are hard to keep warm.. and FYI, our coop does have insulation in it..
Shy-Anne Hovorka. This will be my first winter with chickens. The last
two winters we have had -40 at times and no break in the cold really. I
was wondering about cleaning practices when it comes to winter time. What
do you think is acceptable? Obviously the bigger they get the more they
defecate and I'm not sure how one could keep up with it in the small spaces
but yes I want them to stay warm also.
We scoop put the poop once a week at the least. It does freeze in chunks, so we have a good scraper. The water dish is a heated dog water dish that we also the out and clean. It is pretty quick and easy. Obviously we also give fresh straw with each cleaning. Very easy pets to care for.
Awesome video..we are just setting up for a 4 bird coop.. we actually get
our birds on wed. we live in Alberta and i was wondering what would be best
for the winter and you answered pretty much every question i had.. It can
get cold here..Not northern Sask cold but cold enough.. Best wishes..
+TheArtm4n thanks.. we have 4 chickens.. we like this design, cause we can move them around very easily as it is on wheels. In the summer we move it to the shade, and the winter close to the house in a more sheltered area. let me know if you want other pictures, I can email you some from the summer. They are very happy in there. So far, the coop has survived a bear, a lynx, a weasel (they just couldn't find a way in!) and a wolf that we know of... and many many bald eagles.
