The sound the 4 cylinders in the 2002 Mazda Protege 5. I can't believe this car only has 43000 miles! (sorry for the lack of revving but it is mainly a sound file, ...
I have a 2003 Protégé that made exactly the same sound, but only when cold,
as Erich Weber has indicated for his Protégé. This was a head scratcher for
me for a couple years. At first I dismissed it, thinking that may just be
how a Mazda four cylinder sounds. Wrong. at 126,000 miles, then engine
totally seized. Had the engine rebuilt and re-installed. The noise did not
go away. Had the engine pulled and the motor torn down a second time. The
engine is back in my car, but still makes this noise.
Thanks for the info. This is my dads car and he loves it to death. I have
always heard that noise since I can remember, but the car has just needed
tires and gas. It is got almost 50,000 miles on it and we are just now
thinking about changing the brake pads! I probably need to tell my father,
but I think I have finally talked him into a 2004 BMW 325xi and I hate to
tell him right before I get my own car. See, I knew the Japanese still have
their quirks; my father really loves everything Mazda.
ya it sounds like shit from the sound of it it either has a spun rod
bearing but the fact itis very lite at idel leads me to believe its more of
a rist pin (what connects the piston to the connecting rod) but its
definatly internal so take it to the dealer they can give you a better
discription and idea of whats going on ...good luck
Yeah, Japanese are more my dads thing. I on the other hand I'm die in the
wool German! I love this car, but it isn't nearly refined as a Jetta or a
BMW 3 series! But it does take corners quite nicely and you only have to
change the oil, change the brakes, and put gas in i. It is the best car for
commuting.
One thing to keep in mind was that the morning I did this both of the cars
were 'very' (relative) cold; they hadn't been driven in 2 days and it was
an unusually cold Arizona morning. Now in the summer it doesn't do it as
bad. I am going to try to have somebody look at it.
my mazda protege 02 makes the same sound too, i bought it used as my first
car with 78K miles on it. i thought that sounds normal. but after reading
donutthrowinbdass comment, im curious now. is that a really really big
issue, im planning to use the car for atleast 5 years
Yeah, those German cars are known for the exceptional reliability, but the
Japanese aren't known for their human touches (like comfort, features, and
performance). Both cars have their many pros and cons.
Dont take it to the mazda dealers.. they will steal your money and leave
you wondering why you have refurb or old replacements in your car...
infact... just find a really amazing mechanic.
