Colin Baker had a major role in Doctor Who just a year and 13 stories before he took over as the Doctor, As Maxil in arc of infinity he even shot the fifth Doctor. Even more amazing is Peter Purvis who in 1965 played 2 characters in the SAME story!. Karan Gillan,Ian Marter,Freema Agyeman,Nicholas Courtney,Lala Ward the list of people who have played a previous role in the show before becoming a major character is extensive. This really isnt a big deal.

Capaldi is going to be Epic. i made a list of 3 people i wanted and on June 5th Peter was on that List. so i am excited i feel he will be amazing. People need to move on and not worriing about he has been on the show. just like people going to Indiana Jones and having a issue of Han Solo..... you need to watch Peter Capaldi he has more range and Talent as a actor that is = to any doctor ever. He stole Torchwood!!!!

so river song actress is decades older than mat smith and thats romantic, but peter capaldi with jenna is creepy? I say I wouldnt buy either, but the hypocrisy really stinks when its talking about peters age. I suppose I should love the progressive aspect that is having an older woman with a younger man being acceptable now, but its still hypocritical. Now river with the new doctor makes a little more sense.

It's funny how they just don't care he already appeared twice in the Whoniverse. But it's not something new. Remember Freema Agyeman died in the season 2 finale of Dr Who as a Torchwood assistant, before playing Martha Jones 2 episodes later. Remember Eve Myles appeared in 3rd episode of season 1, even if they tried to explain it at the end of season 4.

I have two completely unrelated friends with the same name who look IDENTICAL -- purely by the power of coincidence. Why is it, that in a show involving time travel and aliens and a flying phone box, people think that someone looking like someone else is too unrealistic?

i know this is late but i cant help but replying.. peter capaldi is an actor it does not matter that he was in that episode, just like it was not important with colin baker before him? what is the problem?

If some of you Doctor Who fans never knew that the role of the Doctor is traditionally meant to be played by an older actor at the beginning of the regeneration cycle and getting progressively younger as each regeneration goes on, you've been living under a rock for 50 years! Some of you fans, I'm telling you. So he's older in The 12th regeneration, so what? It's supposed to be like that at the beginning. :/ And besides, I think Capaldi is gonna be brilliant! Give him a chance before you go bashing him around because he's, as some of you fans call him, 'to old'.

I believe the announcement only came about because the cat was already out of the bag, and Peter Capaldi's name was about to be leaked. As for the the lack of any 50th previews, i'm more than willing to bet that we'll be getting our first taster within the next couple of weeks. It's also quite likely that there are a great many surprises in store (like guest stars), they'd want kept secret,. so some careful editing would be required, Plus, it's months till we get to see the actual episode,

I'll say this again...people who have a problem with DW now are just growing out of a kids show, nothing more, nothing less. The show is otherwise perfectly fine in terms of action, story, content, and character. The 50th has a lot of surprises and it's better to make fans sit on their asses and spring them with a treat when they're good and unsettled. Moff's doing the right thing spoon-feeding them what's neccersary

It was time to get an older actor. I had a feeling Moffat would since his original plan was for Eleven to be played by someone older. Maybe we will have a return to a Doctor more like Nine, with a balance of humor and angst that wasn't emo like Ten. It's time to get back to more of the elements of the Classic series and if that drives the fangirls/fanboys away only watching for eye candy, so be it.
