3D Printing, Guns, & Sex Toys: Q&A with 3D Systems CEO Avi Reichental
"Craftsmanship has been democratized, in the sense that anybody who can get a file can make a gun potentially from undetectable materials," says 3D Systems ...
If I wanted to make a gun I'd CNC it from metal. The plastics the printers
use is crap at this point but in time they may be able to make something
worthwhile. "Democratizing craftsmanship" lol, the guy acts as if any of
this stuff is really that hard to make by hand, it isn't. In WW2 the Polish
resistance developed a submachingun that anyone could make at home with
scrap metal and screws, this guy is just being a salesman, if it were mop
wringers he would say you can't do it without his wringer
Pardon? Bats and Knives? Common items with useful purposes outside of
self-defense? One could use pliers in self-defense or even a deck of cards,
if you believe Mythbusters. Come on man, get real. It's time the state
acknowledge that the purpose of the 2nd amendment was so that we could
adequately defend ourselves or even overthrow our own government. It means
we're supposed to be able to arm ourselves equivalently. It DOESNT mean
that we can use them against innocent civilians. Already illegal.
Hmm, something nobody mentions about 3D printing is that the material is
RECYCLABLE... So you can make shit and reuse the material many, many times
over... as long as it's not exposed to anything toxic it can be reused -
and even if it has been it can be scrubbed by professionals. So you could
get files to print stuff - setup your printer with a big block of material
and start producing anything... once you have enough resources you don't
have to rely on corporations as much, independence ftw.
"gun violence in the USA is reaching an all-time high" you know, if I was
going to through out some striking and easily checkable statistic like
that, I would at least Google "gun crime us trends" or some thing like that
(and find a bunch of links basically saying "way down"). What the hell were
you thinking? Did you think you remembered someone saying something like
that once and didn't bother checking? Did it just feel like it should be
true? Did you just decide to lie for dramatic effect?
But you seem to be advocating laws that restrict game manufacturers. I'm
worried that that would erode our protections from the government
intimidating us. I know that big corps are a threat, but I am afraid more
of big government. After all, government is the biggest corporation we
have. And it is a monopoly as well. As for democracy, that is merely the
least bad technique for govt discovered. The majority regularly violates
minority rights while voting. So I am also only semi-democratic.
The strawman equivalent on the pro-gun is generally "We need to ban bats"
or silverware or something of that kind. Though I don't know how "everyone
loses ground to the state" in gun control, at least at the federal level.
In the last ~10 years, have there been any anti-gun laws at the federal
level? We have increased gun freedom with the courts ruling on handgun bans
and the end of the Assault Weapons Ban. Not that these are bad things but
it seems that would be "everyone winning ground"
this comment has gone so full-retard that I now suspect you're one of those
'baiting trolls who simply gins up BS to take the mickey out of people.
So... 1) the CDC, the FBI, major newspapers, and all criminal statistics
from the last 20 years have been 'right wing lies'? Your invented planet
must be a wonderful place to visit. and 2)... the 1st amendment is now to
be infringed in order to achieve your goals dismantling the 2nd... why am I
not surprised? And you call it 'freedom'. LOL
Shootings are down 39% since 1993. See: Emily Alpert, LA Times, May 7,
2013. ""Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it's up, says study"" To
wit: ""...Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans
surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago,
according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring.
Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had
increased."" So please change your diaper and enjoy your day.
I'm a first amendment fundamentalist. And I agree that violations of that
great amendment come from both parties. Don't think the D's are any better.
I'm neither. And the purpose of the 1st Am. is not to protect us from
private people in private orgs from lying. It is to protect us from the
government. If some private person lies to you, and it costs you money, you
sue in civil court. But if the govt uses its guns to intimidate us from
criticising it, that is a much bigger problem.
A gun is a tool, and it changes the power of people to kill. A good person
isn't going to murder someone because they have a gun, but a evil person
might kill a few more people with a gun then a knife, and a lot more if
they had an M16 rather than a handgun and millions more if they had a
nuclear weapon rather than an M16. The problem with your logic is that
under the same idea we should allow anyone to have nuclear weapons because
we are "freedom-loving people", right?
Right, it is a "strawman" because everyone agrees it would be insane to
allow people to have them. So where do you draw the line and why? Tanks
also seem insane for people to have. How about high caliber gatling guns?
Would it be ok if one bad man had a GAU-19, it can only shot up to 2,000
rounds per minute of 50 cal rounds, so we are only looking at hundreds died
if opened fire in a crowd in less than a minute. There is clearly a line,
it is just a question of where.
No need for sarcasm -- the 1st Amendment was, and still is, a great idea.
It is the ABUSE of the 1st Amendment that is a bad idea. And who abuses
free speech more than Republicans and right-wing groups? NO ONE, that's
who! Gun-rights fanatics, so-called "free-market" think tanks, Rush
Limbaugh, the Koch Bros, Karl Rove, etc. have a long, long history of using
free speech to lie to and propagandize ignorant people to support their
anti-democratic causes.
Whatever has happened recently, the utterly horrifying mass shootings
INCREASED after the Clinton ban on assault weapons. It's as though grabbing
a big gun and mass murdering innocent people is now "cool". Clinton was
right to try to ban "assault weapons" -- though they really should be
called "mass murder weapons" -- but the ban had no teeth. Psychotic people,
who should not be allowed to be anywhere NEAR a gun, still can get them
with ease.
The only places in the US with mass slaughter are places such as Chicago
and Washington D.C. which have strict gun bans. As for the country as
large, have you not seen statistical crime data has gone down exponentially
over the past 20 years? I have the exact numbers but 20 years 15 of the
general population owned a gun. Now it's 46%. Overall crime has gone down.
More guns=less crime. More law abiding citizens are able to protect
themselves.
And if the morons will keep saying "All guns need to be controlled, and all
guns need to be regulated... banned.. taxed.. insured......" then we'll
keep saying No guns need to be controlled and no guns need to be regulated.
It's all straw man. It's all crap. People have to stand up and run for the
extreme side because our history has proven out that if only "reasonable
opposition" is presented, everyone loses ground to the state.
""The right-wing lies so much about gun statistics ..." ...that you feel
compelled to just make up your own? I missed the part when the CIDC and DOJ
became "right wing", BTW. Compared to Mao, maybe. He was for gun control
too. Google = "Justice Department: Gun Murders Down 39 Percent From 1993 to
2011" You can also note that crime/gun violence continued to
decline...after the 2004 end of the 1994 Clinton "assault weapons ban"
I was just saying that the strawman equivalent of nukes would be things
like Bats and Knives. No reasonable person have ever thought it was a good
idea to allow a person to own a nuke or ban bats and knives... I am not
sure how you missed that. And guns, even fully auto guns, will do just
about full all against the US army. Iraq was full of AK-47, yet they did
shit to help them. Only accounting for ~23% of US deaths in Iraq.
I know how difficult it will be to do the right thing (namely: ban
firearms), but at the very least we need to make 3D Systems liable for the
violence that they are unleashing on us. Ditto for anyone who creates or
distributes, or aids one who creates or distributes, the 3D printer data
files for firearms. If we can put them out of business with law suits, then
we can at least keep the weapons off the streets.
Gun violence in the USA is reached a peak in 1993 with 7 gun deaths per
100k. 2010 saw about half that with 3.6 gun deaths per 100k. I don't know
why are do not have the new data, but 2010 is the latest from the CDC. From
the FBI, 2011 was the lowest gun Homicide rate with 2.75 per 1000k, a drop
of 3% from 2010. And a total drop of 15% from 2007. We have the LOWEST gun
violence in over 40 years. Look it up...
You could say; My God --I can go out and buy a 3000 dollar printer and
associated equipment and make a gun that can fire one shot --very
inaccurately!!!! Sign me up ! Or you could say; This is potentially one of
the gretest innovations of the modern age for product designers and small
and medium sized manufacturers wanting to design and build products across
the internt. Sign me up!
People are already making guns without 3d printers. In the Philippines
there are backyard gunsmiths that can make knock offs of Colt 45s and
.38/.357 revolvers even fully auto Mac-10 sub machine guns with basic drill
presses and lathes. In Pakistan they can create exact copies of fully
automatic assault rifles ranging from AKs to M16s, even rocket launchers.
You can recycle ABS, which is one of the most common material of the
personal 3D printers. The generally come in long tubes which feed into the
printers, so you can't just have "a big block of material", but you can
melt the ABS back into the tubes dimension, I would think. Currently you
can buy the plastic online for ~$30 for a 1kg package of the filament.
Well, it is not their fault you are factually incorrect. The FBI and CDC
statics are not "right-wing lies", though some will cherry pick stats
somewhat falsely. While 2012 did have a larger number of mass shooting then
a long time, 2011 and 2010 had rather low numbers of mass shooting. A
single year increase in not a trend and you should not confuse the two.
Actually, you did. You said that video game manufacturers should be held
liable for the real-life violence they inspire. They are not yelling fire
in a crowded theater. They are publishing ideas. They are not responsible
for the bad actions of others in the real world. Holding them liable
amounts to violating their rights to freedom of speech.
Great! Just as gun violence in the USA is reaching an all-time high, with
senseless mass shootings taking place several times per year, now guns can
be manufactured by the dozen IN THE HOME! Folks, do we really want MORE
weaponry in the hands of violent psychopaths and people who feel left
behind by society and the modern economy?
This sounds EXACTLY like the right-wing lies from the Heritage Foundation,
the Hoover Institute, the NRA, etc. Free speech is NOT the right to bombard
the public with lies and to subvert the government by propagandizing the
people. We need limits/restrictions on false-free-speech such as this so
that we can have a free country.
OK, so you are saying that if a majority votes to kill a peaceful minority,
then that is OK because they voted for it? I'm sorry, but I can't subscribe
to your system of morality or government. I'd prefer to live in a peaceful
society where the rights of the minority are upheld. You seem to have a
violent power agenda.
This new press coverage about 3d printing guns is actually about big
business trying to shut down 3D printing. No one has ever been shot by a 3D
printed gun. Big money is worried about their copy rights and patent
protection. They are trying to kill the napster genie of the 3D world
before it gets out of the bottle.
