Short answer: efficiency. Increasing the volume will demand more strength (they do tend to work grip/forearm strength differently than strict). We definitely differentiate between strict and kipping pullups -- they are not the same thing, but if a WOD/challenge doesn't specify, it's about doing the movement as efficiently as possible, which requires skill as much as strength. Generally, the more skilled/efficiency-based movements are allowed because CF has a large focus on functional movement.

It all stems from being judged on a competitive stage. There is a point with strict pull-ups where you can simply do no more due to the fact that it is simply a strength building move. When you kip you incorporate other factors (technique, momentum, etc.) This gives you the ability to be push yourself beyond the point of muscle fatigue. While it is not the most effective muscle building move, it is great for a competitive event based on speed and muscular endurance.

#1 Don't come at me like you're some smart ass just because you know what two different presses are. I do know the difference. ,#2 I don't do crossfit, I am a bodybuilder. I simply think that its maybe good after a set of real pull ups, but crossfit abuses certain gymnastic movements such as strict muscle ups and pull ups. I Have respect for the sport, but not all of the methods involved. I get the concept of the hips.

If sport make you so aggressive in a bad manner, you better stop doing crossfit! Crossfit encourages people to practce exercice but when I hear the way you talk (and this is not emulation or encouragement), I don't want to mingle with you and I stop doing crossfit because I don't want to be as rude as you are. Someone doing crossfit work hard and don't go on the internet to say to other that they are 'dog shit'

I never understood the point to that chest to bar pullup form for anything beyond endurance, may same argument for the kipping you crossfitters do with muscle-ups on rings. Looks stupid and takes the work out of the muscles. It's the pull up equivalent to someone bouncing the bar on a bench press. Don't really get why its in crossfit. Can I get an explanation?

First, recently been watching about every video about crossfit and somehow hope to start doing this type of routine, however, I'm in an area that doesn't have the setup. Second! Crossfit doesn't make a person rude. But some of the more arrogant individuals, who really aren't good at real sports, think they are the best thing since sliced bread because they do crossfit. Crossfit is a gymnast workout and the funny part is that most CFers couldn't hang with a real gymnast.

that's the point though, your body will NOT be comfortable with it, which is why you will see such great results! and those movements shouldn't hard you at all if you have proper mobility and can effectively brace your spine, externally rotate your shoulders, etc. Give it a try you'd like it!

People are different..which means that people have different goals and different views on what is important to them. agreed. but there's something to be said that people just don't push through that barrier to handle the work load. if you start doing 2 wods a day, eventually your body adapts to cope. there WILL be a point where it's absolute hell, but you get through it, and eventually 2 wods a day is the norm. people mostly choose not to push through it, and their bodies never learn how to cope with a higher volume. rich has the genes and the HISTORY to make this pushing easier, but he's still put in the time

I take absolutely nothing away from the endless hours and warrior-like effort this man puts forth when I say this (and believe me, I'm a massive fan of Rich's), but this guy has insane genes. His size, stamina, strength, and ability to constantly beat down his body when others can only handle half the work capacity... all while the guy admits that he eats very little or somewhat poorly (as he's stated several times) and doesn't have much of a programming plan besides whatever he feels. Insane.

Two WOD's a day isn't that much. A person who is not a professional athlete, but simply commited can do two and still do an 8 hour workday; If they go in the morning and the evening. We are talking about less than an hour's time to do two WOD's; we spend more time commuting in traffic a day here, than Rich does with weight in the air. I would rather be in the gym than on the highway myself. My family, friends, and job notice and appreciate my increased capacity and improved mood and outlook.

Ill tell ya two things when it comes down to that long sustained endurance that you see from extreme athletes, its two parts one genetics I can always separate the ones who will push themselves just based off of their body your abs wich are your rapid reoxdizing stimulators because undoubtabley your core is the most important part and as you see rich has an eight pach so he can witstand greater amounts of pressure and stress through prolonged wods or what have you and the last part is mental

what is the essence of sport? here's my personal definition, it is an expression of human movement against an object or an opponent that is not limited to ones physical capacity. Now the "fittest on earth" is a ballsy statement no doubt, however who else out there claims to have the fittest athletes? Does it need to be measured by science beforehand, no. Happy I found this film. Appreciate You tube due to this sort of information. My nephew used to be bullied. He said he was intending to get bigger. I laughed... But then shortly after that he packed on 40lbs of pure muscle. He tried the Muscle Building Bible (look in Google). No person dares to intimidate him these days. :) I signed up last week. I just can't get on board when Rich says he doesn't eat a lot. I'm going to take it as him saying hes not that good at crossfit too. lol. God may have made Rich different however God didn't make rich different if I'm making any sense. :-). Nobody's hitting it 3 times a day and not eating or supplementing properly. Crash and burn. So I'm confident to say that Rich is at least eating enough.

i use hook when i tried power snatches. it's only power snatches as i can't go into a deep overhead squat. i use hook for dead lifts intermittently. i think it just takes getting used to gripping onto the thumb, but i do notice it is very effective. i don't like the mixed grip for deadlifting, which is why i've used it for deadlift. my 1.6X 3RM was done with non-hook grip, non-mixed.

Are you using the hook grip? In case you are not, try it and you will feel why soon enough, once you go heavy :) If you do use it and still dont know - you must have thumbs of steel :P (if you dont know the hook grip - look it up, its a very strong low-risk (but painful) grip - very effective for oly lifting where you cant use a mixed grip like for deadlifting).

When you're doing power movements, olympic lifting tends to eliminate the eccentric movement (lowering the weight). Dropping it conserves energy so you can do more sequential lifts. They'd rather get 20 good explosive lifts with the heaviest weight possible rather than 10 with a less heavy weight where they expend tons of energy controlling it back to the floor.

We understand your criticism, but there is no need for such negativity. People will do what they do, some are genetic freaks like Rich. Just because you can't recover doesn't mean other people can't. How can I get ahold of Rich does someone have his email or something. allow me to explain, I am 18 years old and In around two months I will be leaving my little town to go to basic training for the marines. Now in general terms I am already in shape, but like many of us its not enough to just be in shape. I have a few questions for him and would like to see if he couldn't help me better prepare for basic training and to maybe gain some more mass. I currently only weigh in at 158 pounds at like 6 feet tall. I would like to get to be around 170-180 or so but like I said I would just like it if I could get ahold of him.
