There hasn´t been a year in school where no History teacher talked about this. One of the greatest calamities to strike Portugal in all ages, started at 9 am with an earthquake that destroyed the coast line buildings as well as the interior of Lisbon itself. The earthquake ended and 5 minutes later another one started stronger than the first. The population, assuming they´d be safe on the coast, retreat there only to be struck by an enourmous tsunami. Millions of people died, other thousands lost their houses and belongings. The King and his family took refuge on the interior and left Marquis of Pombal to deal with the solutions. "Bury the dead and treat the wounded", he said. Ordered the reconstruction of Lisbon as you seen in the maps and showed no mercy to those who took advantage of the situation to steal, murder etc... It was a bloody massacer. I´m sure I lost a relative back then, my mom´s side was living in Lisbon at the time.
