I vow to never ever ever own a credit card. In fact, I'm going to teach myself stock markets so I can invest while I'm in varsity. Watching my family skim by every month is heartbreaking! The power of Google and YouTube prevails!

+URBAN MNGUNI If you have extra cash to save, look at ETFs like Satrix, or Unit Trusts via Coronation and Allan Gray. You can get started for R500/month or less, without having to actively manage a stock portfolio (which is a massive time-sink, and you could lose a lot more than you make).

What an eye-opener! I wish university students watched this.. Financial discipline is painful when you start doing so as a young adult. When we start working, we are further paralysed by access to credit. Thanks Sanlam

+Buyisile Mncina Hi Buyisile, thank you for these insightful comments. These lessons are the most valuable at a young age, as difficult as it can sometimes seem. We wish you the best of luck on your savings journey.

Thank You very much Sanlam for reaching out to thousands of people who are still living under the influence of credit cards and those who don't keep track of where and how they spend their money. This is really helping me as a young adult, much appreciated. I would love to be next on the Programme #R5 Woman for the month (Maybe September for my 25th BDay or any other month). Would love to see another programme for the month.

This is great, they spent less than they'd usually spend with bank cards etc. Awesome stuff

+Sanlam I can only imagine having to pay using those R1 coins being HELL! I think I'd also spend less due to the process of having to count those 1 rands at every shop, but I'm sure the taxi drivers would appreciate the change! haha This is a great social experiment that every South African can learn from.

+Phume Dimba Hi Phume, having to physically count out each rand is definitely stopping them from making any spontaneous purchases. How do you think you would manage living only on one rand coins?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
ngcwele ngo sbu!! i learned a lot form this thing but unfortunately we can never be one rand family's everymonth,

+nhlanhla ndlovu Its great to hear that you're learning something from this, Nhlanhla. Remember, you don't need to get your salary in one rand coins to realize that there is immense value in saving. Whether its for your family, your future or something special you have in mind - saving your hard-earned cash means your money is working for you. Take a look at this quiz to determine your money personality: //onerandfamily.sanlam.co.za/quiz.html Once you understand how you spend - it may be easier to save.

Since black South aren't wealthy with cattle and land could we please do away with this lobola thing? We're really tired of starting families with poverty.

+Obakeng Thomas rather than kill the practice y not cant we get our land back and build community's that ar self sustainable like we had before , i dont think lobola iz going anyway i wouldn't feel well if the family sad dont pay it , i would feel undermind totally
