Gene Kardos & His Orch. - A Hot Dog A Blanket And You, 1931
This orchestra - which, actually, was active only in the Ist half of the 1930s, presenting the early swing style, in many recordings retained though, the charm of hot ...
My Great-Grandparents had an entirely different concept of College than we
do, today. THEN, one went simply to learn, rather than to 'compete' with
others for grades. That left a lot of time for fun. One set of Great
Grandparents were too poor to actually go (the Civil War & financial panics
had left their families in desperate circumstances). For them, college
represented some Paradise of showing off in front of a lot of people: being
part of a "scene". SONGS LIKE THIS ARE PROBABLY WHY.
A peppy college number, lots of fun. The other comments have me wondering
whether the writer intended the song to be suggestive, or whether we're
applying our modern sensibilities. The blanket (to wrap around you and
friend while sitting in the grandstands) and the hot dog (a big-game
tradition) are quite appropriate to the song and possibly innocent...but
then I remember "frankfurter sandwiches" and recall the old-timers weren't
necessarily any cleaner-minded than us moderns.
Thanks for the great song & slide show 240252. Could you tell me how you
created the slide show of old photos please? The images are so clear. Were
they scanned from prints or slides? Did you shoot the photos with an easel,
tripod and some kind of macro-zoom close-up lens? I'd appreciate any tips
on photos. Really a great mix of photos and great old music!! I'll take
78's and a Victrola any day over those goofy iPod things.
@63lambretta Yes, perhaps the hip-hop fans will burn some 78's from their
MP3's so that they will still have music to listen to in the event of a
power failure. Hey, do you have a 1963 Lambretta? I used to see some of
those in SF at the Bat Cave and in Seattle during the European Scooter Club
events. stay hip, HM
I do not know whether there is sexual innuendo in this number or otherwise,
but it is a real "toe tapper". The picnic pictures seem to be essentially
English (rather than British). They are very good and appropriate to the
song anyway. Thanks for posting.
Amazing how dressed up the people appear even in a casual moment compared
to today. Glad to see our Grandmothers having fun and enjoying youth as we
did...As to the blanket and the hot dog - I will not go there
lol............
Obviously an inspiration for the somewhat newer record I posted - A Little,
A Pretzel and You. However, the inclusion of a blanket in this song is a
bit more suggestive. Great pictures - how dressed up they are.
@HunterMann It is pretty amazing that a teeny Ipod will hold a literal Ton
of 78 RPM recordings. However, you and I will be playing our beloved
Victrolas if the power grid ever goes down!
Love this spunky lively music. Off to Tunisia on Monday, where they
probably won't have hotdogs but I hope they have blankets. (No sexual
innuendo intended!)
Gene gave up his band about 1940 to go into the postal service. He still
played at night in a restaurant, but it was Hungarian music. My mom heard
him there!
Splendid 'College' song and well-presented. However these are very English
pictures for a very American song - plenty of American college pics out
there.
You're right! This is clearly about watching a game, prob. football, on a
chilly day. I'm often tempted to look for hidden meanings, but not this
time.
The hoodie debate gave teenagers a bad reputation. From what was and still is a wider social problem. Hoodie warfair stands up on the side of the hoodie ...
Hoodies are clothes, if someone wear to do bad things they would do it no
matter what they were wearing. if they wear waistcoats, there will be
people say "oh no, the waist coats are influencing them. ban the
waistcoast!" it's pointless. besides even if they did ban the hoodie,
you'll have the makers complaining and in no time at all there will be a
similar type of clothing on the market.
