+hiyadroogs While I wouldn't say this version left me cold, I do understand your point.  I've always felt that this is one song that requires the singer to have been beaten up some by life if they want to get everything there is out of it. A great example is in the final verse, on Losing my timing this late/In my career.  CTZ sings it, and does it beautifully.  But in Dench's version, she feels the weight of what those words mean, and you can feel that she feels it.One thing that may make a difference is that because this is part of the cast recording, it's treated as a standalone song, rather than a song that is part of the scene.

Of the complexity of relationships, - a sense of futility in persuing something that no longer works, but to which we commit anyway. Most of all, it requires life experience & personal depth to really understand & convey it. A sensitive actor with a natural feeling for rubato in music to convey meaning beyond words.It was reasonably sung, but had no real meaning, depth, or empathic understanding to Catherine or me.Glynis Johns, who was in no way a singer, had an entire audience in tears when she performed this on English television, precisely because she emoted the song rather than sang it, which is why the audience went with her. - This left me cold I'm afraid.

Honest, yes...but Dame Judi,despite her talents, is no singer. Listen to her sing the title song of her old show 'Fine Romance'. Listen to that, and then the rich, tender vibrato of Miss Catherine Zeta-Jones and then write a comment. There's loads of emotion in this one, Judi's is way soft and toned down to nearly not audible.
