On this day in 1971 {February 21st} The 5th Dimension performed "Love's
Lines, Angles, and Rhymes" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Six days later on February 27th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart;
eventually it peaked at #19 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... It reached
#6 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary Songs chart... Original group
member Ron Townson passed away on August 2nd, 2001 at the age of 68...
R.I.P. Mr. Townson and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...
You-all could not be more right!! This was probably the very best time for
popular music in history - nothing against the '50s and '60s, they were
great too - but NOTHING can touch the Beautiful Music of the early '70s!
And yes, Marilyn Mc Coo was the best! It all went downhill after early '73.
I miss those days terribly! I hated Junior High, but I loved the music, and
at the age of 53, I wish I could live through it just once more. El Gordo
Whether Marilyn sang lead, Billy sang lead, Florence sang lead or NObody
sang lead, this was a group that couldn't make a dull record. When this
came out in the first cold months of 1971 I was about to turn 17, and we
had no idea how spoiled we were. It was like we had some God-given right to
talent this good, year after year, record after record. There is nothing
about today's music that makes me envy today's teenagers.
This band exuded the highest degree of class and quality of any American
rock band ever! Marilyn McCoo delivered the most sincerest concise vocals
that could be heard on the airways in the 1970's. What impeccable quality
and poise! This is a incredibly beautiful song and Marilyn makes it so
intensely real for me. I really wish that I could have seen this band
perform live in the 70's. This song is so surreal!
There are a LOT of talented artists out there...who can REALLY sing and are
original...the problem doesn't lie with them, but with the record companies
and media groups that continuously choose to promote and air those artists
that are making crappy, autotuned, and uncreative, copycat music. It sucks
to see artists like John Legend, Janelle Monae, Ledesi, Esperanza
Spaulding, etc...get NO LOVE on the radio.
I agree totally. Voices that blended beautifully, great vocal arrangements,
picking the best jazz arrangers for their background, and of course,
picking the best songs of their generation. Webb, Nyro, and others. They
just did everything right and that's why they are the best and sound like
the music was recorded yesterday...it will never get stale!!!!!
Debuted on the CHUM (Canada) chart in Apr 1971, peaked at #29 & charted for
2 weeks Debuted on the Billboard pop chart on Feb 27, 1971, peaked at #19 &
charted for 10 weeks Debuted on the Billboard R&B Chart on Mar 13, 1971,
peaked at #28 & charted for 5 weeks Debuted on the Record World pop chart
on Feb 20, 1971, peaked at #12 & charted for 11 weeks
I so agree, ever since i got serius radio, i been listening to the 60 and
70 songs, and i get all teary eyed while i drive, so many ppl gone from my
life now, and every song i hear reminds me of someone .....a party, a time,
a dance, whatever, it hurts, i should blow up my radio, huh?? this song is
so beautiful
Marilyn has one of the most beautiful, recognizable voices ever.I love this
so much, heard it in Walgreens of all places and had to come home and play
it! ♥♥ Perfect Valentine Song! ♥♥ I just realized this song is 41 years
old! I had my son in 1971 when this was out!~♥♥
They performed "Light Sings" and this tune on "The Tonight Show" with
Johnny Carson in 1971 in two appearances. I was just in Jr High and stayed
up late to see them do " Light Sings." I wish I could have seen them do
"Loves Lines" which I know they performed on another show.
Marilyn mccoo sings every song with clarity and emotion...you rarely need
to look at a lyric sheet to decipher the words...we know what she's singing
and she delivers so beautifully...today's artists really should study her
technique...they would all benefit greatly...
I love what you said about originality. THAT is what is missing today.
Yeah, I guess part of it is because we are getting older and longing for
some of the things we miss. But I really think we lived in a very "SPECIAL"
musical era that will not repeat itself - ever!
this was the era,so much was happening and the music was awesome the war
and everything, was drafted in 1969,and everything was changing, even the
music, so many different styles of it, soul, rock ,hard rock, psychedelic,
etc,folk, jazz, fusion[miles davis]
As far as I'm concerned, there is everything RIGHT with you. We had such a
fantastic variety of sounds - it was like a musical revolution and nearly
everything was allowed airing. We were lucky to enjoy these uniquely
special musical years while younger...
analog tape, analog mixing desk, analog compression flawless voice perfect
production, composition real musicians not a computer in sight it's no
coincidence that we'll never get anything sounding even slightly close to
this ever again
I saw them in concert at Cobo Arena in Detroit as a reward for
trick-or-treating for St Judes Childrens Hospital in the late 60's. They
were the Head-Liners, as well as MANY other bands. Danny Thomas ever made
an appearance.
Born just in time to subconsciously hear this playing on radio at the
hospital, supermarket, doughnut shop. My early childhood WAS, pretty much,
this song. Like gazing at a soft focused purple-orangey kaleidoscope. Wow.
I miss the 70's so much I can taste it with this song. Marliyn was so
incredible in this song. What a beautiful woman she is and what a terrific
voice to go with it. I'll love this band forever...what a class act band!
@Majikart Nope nothing wrong with you, and you are not alone, but for me it
is a little more the 60's, and also the 70's-- more than likely I am older
than you. Music of today is pathetic I must day for the most part.
No there is nothing wrong with you. I was raised by my grand father and he
had a music collection that dated back to the 20`s; the 70`s were superior
to any decade since the invention of recorded music.
Glad I found this awesome tune. I know the 5th Dimension recorded many hits
back in the day, but I didn't know they recorded this one. This song is far
better than most of the crap on the radio today.
One of my favorites and I too was only 15 and simply loved all their music
-- and since I am a geek math was one of my favorite subjects: geometry and
chemistry and this song just blended right in
Well there must be a reason why they are choosing to do that. Probably
because it's much easier than nuturing or promoting real talent. Real
talent isn't always pretty, and can't always dance, etc..
