I performed this scene in Drama once. It was one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done. I played Mr Hutchinson seeing as Bernard Cribbins is one of my favourite actors of all time.

This is not a startle reflex or response because there is no apparent stimulus present to cause a reaction. It's called a hypnagogic jerk as noted below. It can happen to adults as they are falling asleep or sometimes when they are asleep.

It's called a hypnagogic reaction or sometimes hypnagogic jerk...very normal...not a seizure. Adults will often do this as well
