I talk about Jordan Almonds, those pastel candies you might see at weddings. Sources: Kimmerle, Beth. Candy: The Sweet History. China: Collectors Press, Inc.
I remember not liking these so much; I think it was a texture thing. You
can't pair a crunchy with another crunchy; cuz, like, chocolate covered
almonds are good, and candy coated chocolates are good... Iunno... go fig!
Tapioca is a starch from the cassava plant that takes on the flavor of
whatever your baking. As in the pudding, vanilla is usually added as the
flavoring agent. Tapioca is used as a thickening agent in a large amount of
foodstuff. Interestingly, tapioca comes from the cassava root which if not
treated for the removal of linamarin, would be poisonous. The linamarin is
converted upon ingestion by humans into cyanide. Another interesting side
note, while we are on the subject, the variety known as bitter almond also
has the ability to poison much like the cassava plant, only its not
linamarin but glycoside amygdalin which when converted turns into prussic
acid, more commonly known as hydrogen cyanide. Sort of makes you think
about the next wedding you attend. Always interesting and entertaining as
well. Thanks for sharing!
+Darkside Laments This was a great comment with a lot of great information. I feel I should have done more research on tapioca. That probably explains why I couldn't recall the exact flavor of tapioca. Thanks!
That was funny towards the end. Your so very lucky Daniel to be working in
the Penny Candy Shop. To bad I am Allergic to Almonds & also Peanut
Products. Moving to Ontario is not good as you can become allergic to a
lot of things. Hope that you had a great Thanksgiving. Cheers.
My mom had these at her wedding and chipped her tooth T_T
