'03 Montero/Pajero Rear Driver's Side Axle Fell Out
The companion flange that attaches to the rear axle of my 2003 Montero fell out and oil leaked all over the driveway. Turns out this is a common problem.
+Дима Попович for the generation 3 montero/pajero mitsu switched to an independent rear axle vs the solid axle from previous versions. I don't really know if the torque is causing it to jump out, I think it has more to do with suspension flex.My guess is that you flex the suspension at the right point in the axle rotation and it will pop out more easily. search for "pajero circlip", and you will find a bunch of Australian forums talking about it.
There have been no problems so far. I ended up unbolting the short axle and pulling it out of the differential. I pulled the circlip out and manually opened it up just a little. So far it seems to be holding without any problems.if I remember correctly, the fix is to get an axle shaft and circlip from a later model year. In the US, the 04+ years have the alternate shaft and circlip that stops everything from coming apart.

little video of my hand and home made Rc Pajero, with front independent suspension, rear solid axle, home made chassis .... nice setup for a small wheelbase.
