You sound a bit harsh and excessive with your criticism. There's nothing
wrong with a little "dark and gray" in life. not everything is cotton candy
and rainbows. and as for dreary, pick up any old fairy tales book and
realize that most kids books are actually pretty gruesome and scary. This
is a cute story with a moral by comparison.
It teaches readers the importance of making inferences. They can assume he
ate the small fish or they can assume the small fish fell asleep and he
took his hat back or many other scenarios. Unlike adults children do not
always assume the worse it does not teach them to steal or be judge, jury
or executioner. Get your young readers to infer it is a useful tool they
will use for years to come!
THANK YOU!!! I am taking a Children's Literature class and had to read a
Caldecott Medal winning book for an assignment. You just saved me a last
minute, freak-out trip to the library! :-)
On another note, this book is TOO CUTE! I don't think it "teaches kids to
steal"... rather, I would say that it is a good starting point for having a
discussion about why stealing is wrong.
I used this video to share the book with my students during our school's
book tournament. The students loved how you read the book and I believe
your reading voice helped it win the tournament. Thanks for doing such a
great job!

+TinyBig Production My students were thrilled that you replied to my comment. They would love for you to read more books for them. Each year my students need to read or hear books from a list. If you could read some from this list that would be great. We look forward to hearing you read again next school year.//www.library.arkansas.gov/ChildrensBookAwards/Documents/DiamondFinal%20List%202015-16.pdf
