Excellent presentation, with passion that excuses. The short answer is
"Yes, we can!" And, I would submit, we can do so without throwing out the
baby with the bathwater. We should remember that this is a new, and ongoing
experiment. There is certainly, within a pretty well (currently, anyway)
defined time-experience for the learner, a wide range of opportunities to
challenge our expected outcomes.
One of the as yet undefined benefits of the MOOC is the interaction through
Discussion Fora, for instance. From the shotgun beginnings we experience to
a narrowing to on-focus discussions, perhaps we should be driven to measure
an additional outcome sequence. From "Do you know this?" perhaps we should
be investing in a few extra questions that consider "What are YOU going to
do with this?" or "Of what value do you see this learning experience
(segment or total) as empowering you to effect social and/or personal
change in your world?"
It's not really difficult. We just need the imperative. Thanks for
providing a small spark in that direction.
