It is great to see this progress in consumer robotics. We are going to need it. @hodenriss - If you could vacuum that place in 7 minutes you are doing a far worse job, and that is just cleaning the same areas it cleaned. You obviously don't vacuum often. A human cleaner would probably take about 30 minutes to do the same wall-to-wall coverage, though I can move the chairs easier... Though I could just as easily put a few fo the chairs up and out of the way in a few seconds...

It does not know the map of the whole house when you turn it on. It creates the map as it moves along and uses the map to determine where to go and when there's no place left to go. I think the blue spot in the beginning represents a so-called landmark. Something that the robot can always sense and see it's relative displacement to. Everything is mapped relative to the landmarks and the robot uses kalman filtering to obtain a very accurate estimate of it's position.

@JJOOKER I wasn't meaning that.. I was meaning that the robot might get confused and leave a big area unclean. The stairs thing is a minimal problem :)
