Day 24 - White River Stomp - Patti Kusturok's 365 Days of Fiddle Tunes
It's time for a foxtrot on Day 24. This is a tune that I believe Don Messer wrote. White River Stomp is a really popular old time dance tune. Jeremy Rusu is on the ...
By the way, it strikes me that Messer’s setting of Miller’s Reel may have been lifted, as is, out of Cole’s 1000. It’s quite close. Other Canadian fiddler’s have used Cole’s -- Mylie Barron (Voyager Records) for example.
+howard marshall Hi howard! Ya, for some reason they started calling it “Dusty Miller” in Canada, Dusty Miller being a completely different tune in the States. I think Messer may have started that nonsense. Graeme Townsend called it that too. I don’t call it that and try to get other Canucks not to call it that. By the way, BigJohn appears in Christensen’s book and was played by Cyril Stinnet and Uncle Bob Walters. St. Anne’s, Woodchopper’s and Angus Campbell were also in their repertoire, and in R.P.’s book. I used to be able to get Nebraska on my car radio up in Saskatchewan on really cold winter nights in January, the air being dense. I think Bob Walters must have been able to pick up Messer playing on CBC broadcasts, perhaps out of Winnipeg, on cold winter nights. I think Dwight Lamb said that they also used to find Ned Landry LP’s in the larger centres down there. I think Lonnie Robertson may have had a Canadian tune in his rep too, one that sounded a lot like Frenchie’s. Anyway, I love the Missouri valley or hornpipe style of Uncle Bob and Cyril; it seems to have something akin to Canadian fiddling. Lots of notes maybe. :-)
+Jeremy Corrigal Big John MacNeil is a beloved Metis fiddle tune.
Buffalo Gals, St.Anne's Reel, Big John McNeil

..Hi.. Melissa Enjoy listening to your music. Very very nice. Myself and my
brother started playing again after many years for me without touching the
guitar. We open a you tube channel (Alyre Doiron) We play the old ways that
we use to down the country. We kept it simple with mendolin and guitar. St
Anne's Reel is one of my favorite and included it in our video. Hope you
have a chance to visit and listen to a few of our ways of playing these old
tunes. Comments is so much appreciated.

Its so good to hear a good tune from a place I know of as my Dad Donald
MacLennan was born there on the quarter section right south of the service
station in 1896.
Thanks for comments everyone! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It was fun
playing with such a great band. They definitely helped make me me sound
