Hi! I'm actually planning on studying abroad at TUJ Summer 2016 andI was wondering how much it cost to study there JUST for the summer. I don't live in PA or a Temple student so my tuition would be around $12k. The TUJ representative told me it was around $8k for the summer session but I'm not sure if this accurate because I'm assuming this is without all the fees.. So I was wondering if you knew? Considering you seem very well informed about TUJ Also how early should I apply for Summer 2016 session and Visa? I heard it takes a while for Visa and rather expensive? If you could get back to me ASAP it would be greatly appreciated!

https://www.tuj.ac.jp/ug/admissions/deadlines.html <-------that's the admissions deadlines for every year. I'm not sure when is "too early" to apply but I do live in the US and if you apply for FAFSA then your automatically applying for the pell grant (but if the scholarship is merit based its about grades, if its need based then having proof you will get the pell grant will be essential)If you live in the US then you're fine for the visa ^.^

Thank you for the info! I took a look at the scholarships but they're only taking applicants for this summer and I am planning on going next summer so I have to wait until next year to apply for next summer I'm guessing? Also do I need to apply for the Pell Grant before I can apply for the scholarships for TUJ? Because I haven't applied for the Pell Grant yet because I'm in community college right now..Does TUJ have a schedule where it shows admissions for next year? Like if you were applying for Fall 2016 or Summer 2016?Also where do I find information about checking out if your country needs a Visa or not? I'm not sure if you live in the US but I do and I'm not sure if US residents are required to obtain a Visa...

~as a note I'm supposed to refer all questions to their admissions email but since you've already talked to them, and I'm quoting the website exactly I think it's okay if I help you!~Here's the link for the summer semester info: https://www.tuj.ac.jp/ug/summer/index.html are you going for university credit? If so that page says near the bottom that the total is 1,179,250 (USD 9854.18 right now) and that includes the fees, tuition, housing, and estimated living expenses. The application deadline is April 1st, and after that they'll tell you how the visa stuff works (don't worry, it all gets in on time, but no matter how early you turn it in you won't get the visa much earlier than a week or two before you leave) and if you are really only going for summer it says "Many nationalities do not need a visa for stays in Japan less than 90 days, and do not need to apply for a visa to study at TUJ for the summer" and it has a link for the countries that do, but if your country isn't listed the deadline is Feb 15th This is a link (https://www.tuj.ac.jp/ug/cost-financial-aid/scholarships/external.html#SASO) for the scholarships, at the bottom lists two short term eligible scholarships! I hope all this helps!

hi i'm applying for the fall semester this year and i have a question about the visa. i'm actually quite poor and come from a poor family, so my only help with financial aid would be fafsa and scholarships. my fiance lives in tokyo, so i want to finish the rest of school living with him. i was wondering since the visa app requires the proof of 3 million yen or so, do you think fafsa would be enough to cover that? i know it said you have to live the first semester at dorms or homestay, but i plan on discussing the possibility of living with my fiance or my fiance's' family, so that should cut a lot of the costs if they allowed it. i've been to japan a few times already and would not only love to live with my fiance, i would love to live there because i noticed that the few times i've been there my japanese has improved and that is my major.

Depending on the currency rate, the 3 mil yen is about $25,000-$28,000 and fafsa even if you get the max amount for fafsa it's only like 4000 something for the pell grant and 10000 for the stafford loans. TUJ doesn't do work study...They do however do scholarships! If you had a B average in high school (or college if you've taken more than 13 credits) and maybe were in a club and have a couple teachers that can provide letters of recommendation then you might get one of their scholarships for $2000-$3600! That's still not enough, but the bridging scholarship (//www.aatj.org/study-japan/study-abroad-japan-bridging-scholarships) is for another 3 or 4 thousand! Also, don't start in the summer semester! Because summer semester you only get leftover fafsa aid from the previous year and its a shorter term so you dont get as much fafsa no matter what (thats the boat I'm in right now, but luckily my husbands parents saved us last minute! yay!)I think certain states also have some loans/grants but not many so you might wanna check into that! Also, also! No matter what you should have about $2-3,000 saved up from your own money. I know this is a lot but TUJ is pretty strict on their dorm situation and don't usually let students get out of it unless they are actually married or have a disability. To have enough money for your first 2-3 months will save you SO much headache, even if you have the support of your fiance! Hope this helps! Me and my family had no money either so it's been a long road for me but unfortunately my dad did technically make a lot of money so I didn't get any fafsa until I got married! SO SORRY THIS IS SO LONG!

This may sound stupid, but... I have two years to go (technically 5 months and 1 year) and I want to go to TUJ. The only problem is, I plan to go with my brother, he is going after college and me after high school because we both grad in 2 years. You may not see a problem with that at first, but the problem lies with where you have to stay. I read on their website you have to spend your first semester (I think) at the place they want you to be placed. Our plan from a long time ago was to go together because we both share a love of Japan and its culture, so I want to live with him. Not some place where they want me to. Do you think they will excuse me to live with my brother? I mean... If not that screws our whole plan up. We have two years to settle stuff so it shouldn't be a problem. Thank you for your time! I have subbed!

+Princess! 王女さま XD Thanks. I was wanting to quit mock trial to work, but I guess I won't. You have been so much of a great help, like seriously, you don't even know. I am going to work from here until then, stay in mock trial, and try to do good on my ACT. Thank you very much for fast responses and answering my questions. :)

+Tyler Henry They say they look at the whole application and other "college ranking" type sites have said that its a pretty moderate college to get into. Meaning if you have a 3.0 and a decent ACT score you'll "more than likely" get in. (I quote that because the admissions counselors can't and won't tell you if you'd be able to get in or not, you gotta wait for the official acceptance) Also I would think 20+ would be a decent ACT score. I had a 3.19 GPA, 25 ACT, and yes I was in many clubs but I think I'm on the higher end of getting in, I've heard of people getting it with much lower scores than all that (and if you aren't in a club thats not a big deal, but if you can you might wanna tell them a reason why, if there's that option, aka you had a job or wanted to focus on studies) The admissions application was pretty easy and basic, there was no essay. It was the scholarship application that I really poured my everything into, I sent in my job history resume, my clubs, and every little teeny award I had ever gotten (I sent in a lot of ribbons for competitions, they were pretty much all 7th place but little did they know that there was only 7 or 8 contestants anyways xD) whatever makes you look good!

+Princess! 王女さま I have a question, what's the average GPA, ACT score, and whatever else you need to get into it? Did you need to be in a club? Were you in a club? How about a 3.0 GPA (That's what I've been running for the last two years)
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0wx-w_GbNw0/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAQA/-cz51w94gxY/photo.jpg?sz=64
I see. That's too bad... Thanks anyway! Your information is helpful.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fDtPG_pGIhU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/yNuAatQcGE8/photo.jpg?sz=64
Hmmmm, well I know they are pretty strict on staying in their dorms unless your married or have a medical condition. I totally understand you wanting to go with your brother, I'm pretty upset that I'll be in Japan a whole month before my husband and will have to experience the firsts alone D:I dont know about TUJ specifically, but I know in regular colleges you are allowed to "request" a roommate...It's not a given but they take it into consideration. You could shoot them a question now, but unfortunately you can only talk to an admissions counselor (they don't let you talk with anyone else until you are accepted, it was a little annoying) Otherwise my advice would be to maybe try and do a summer program before you graduated so you can experience everything together! TUJ has summer programs now, or there's a million others! CIEE, and if moneys a problem (cuz who has thousands of dollars to shell out!) you can do WWOOF which is basically organic farming, you work up to 6 hours a day for free food and a place to sleep! There are occasional horror stories on being worked longer than 6 hours, but if you ended up in that situation you are free to leave and join another place. Also it's not just farming, there's restaurants, fine art shops, grocery stores etc! I reeeaaalllyy wanted to do it but didn't get to in time.Sorry for my rambling but I hope this helps! Again to summarize, they are pretty strict on the dorms and you aren't "guaranteed" anything basically until you get there. Thanks :)
