Is $70 a reasonable price for a AAA game? - The Question
Destructoid staff and contributors assemble to answer The Question: Is $70 a reasonable price for a AAA game? Answer The Question for yourself in the ...
Poland here. We do not have € and we wont have them soon. We are not in the
same price region as Germany and other EU countries. But everyone is trying
to put us in same one. Both music albums and games are getting much more
expensive. New Tomb Raider. Steam: 50€. All shops (online too) are selling
boxed version for just over 25€. And it is about half of console's version
price. I'm student. If I get part-time job just to buy console games, I
could afford 2-3 a month.Just checked and did math.
lets be real its all situation dependent. is 70 that much more than 60? no
but look at it this way. I'm now a pretty responsible adult who is also an
avid gamer and between this month and the next (March-April) there are 5
games i want that all cost $60 that's $300....THREE HUNNA!.....FOR
ENTERTAINMENT!.......and this industry doesn't usually operate where only
specific console games go for a higher price the whole industry will follow
suite so no it's not reasonable (Sorry for the bad grammar)
Depends on the publisher and the game. Rpg's tend to be on the long side
and are often worth the $40-70 pricetag - Disgaea especially. But NIS is
also the exception, since I wait and buy directly from their booth at anime
expos - they get the full profit, with no middle-man - makes me want to pay
more, actually. But not every game is worth it - Blaze Blue, yes - Marvel
vs capcom, kinda - Mortal Kombat / DC, not really. Even multi-million
dollar blockbusters are $30, tops... I pay for quality.
It could work for some games, the problem is suddenly all the developers
would believe that they have a 70$ AAA game. Skyrim is a game that could
charge 70$ because it has so much insane content packed into it, but then
there would be so many examples of medicore experiences that can be fun.
But because the publisher think it's AAA they could suddenly start asking
70$ for a 5 hour medicore experience. There are very few games that are
worth more money then 60$, so instead just buy CE edition.
Well, that will actually come to the quality of the games. If all of us
paying 10 dollars more, for every game out there. Then I think the quality
requirements will be much higher on games from the consumers. So a broken
shitty mess of patches as the Skyrim was, would not sell a single copy the
next day after a review. But a GTA game with smaller fixing patches, will
still sell at the 70 dollar price margin. But a Capcom game, with DLC
already on the disc would not sell anything day one.
I believe $70 is too much for a game. Most games don't even have the
quality to be considered worth half of their asking price these days to
begin with. I'm more of a quality>quantity kind of guy & I'm happy that I
spent full price for DISHONORED for example. But games like CRYSIS 3 or say
RE6 are not worth the admission price. AC3 as well, I hate doing the same
thing over & over to make the game longer. Give me a great experience that
I'll remember & I'll pay full for it. Otherwise no.
Yeah but, the exchange rate for the Aus$ is pretty low so, it roughly
averages out at close to the same as American or European retail
cost...What I don't like is that for years we're told that games are
expensive thanks to the packaging and shipping and all that yet, full games
available to download in the Playstation store (Not sure about Xbox) are
MUCH more expensive than their hard copy counterparts! That really
frustrates me!
Yeah we/I do. It sucks. Really does. Just like I replied to the other
person. Just because you got it worse, we still have it bad as well
compared to the income level most people here make. Still sucks for us.
Sucks for you as well. . But were still having to deal with our situation.
How much do you guys get taxed on games in Australia? I mean, somewhere
your getting taxed out the wazoo on the game, or import cost or something.
i just wait for games to lower in price. Then go to my game store with 100$
i saved up from my paycheck by taking out like 20 a week and just buy like
7 "older" fun games. games prices go down fast unless there one of the most
over wanted games like skyrim or cod even if there not worth it. Most fun
games i see go down, i got re4 for 25$ at gamestop a month after relassed
used and it hasn't broken yet..
I can tell you, if games do go up to $70 people are going get fewer games
for sure. Game length, replay ability and online play will play a larger
factor than it already does. The majority of people are not going to take
chances with short games with no online, no matter how creative/original
they are. And in turn this would hurt the industry which may already be
headed for another crash.
@MrApophis666 True. I'm a fan of mgs because of the story and how long it
usually is but when I heard rising only had a length of like 4-6 hours max
I was like this isn't really worth the buy if its that short. I know it's
not mgs but mgr, that's still to fucking short. I did buy it but used and
it still cost me around 65 dollars. Beat the game and returned it the next
day lol.
Why you would pay 70 dollars for a game?! Imagine if you pre-ordered
Aliens: Colonial Marines, and since it is a AAA game, it costed $70. You
would be extremely pissed because the game stinks! And if you got it on PC,
you can't return it for some money back! I hate how a lot of AAA games now
are 60 dollars, mostly on the consoles, I miss it when games were 40
dollars or less!
It all depends on the game, for Skyrim I would defiantly pay around $60 or
$70 USD for it because there is a lot of content in that game and it seems
worth it for the money. I own a lot of video games, but I did not and will
never pay $60 to $70 USD each for all of them because they just aren't
worth that much, whereas a game as big as Skyrim is worth that much in my
book.
The question soon becomes whether or not a digital release should cost $70.
On the consoles at the moment new releases are priced just as high as their
retail counter parts. So with that logic, should retail discs cost more
than they do? The quality and experience of a game is not determined by how
many people and how much money are behind it, but by who.
But what about in a few years? Would you still pay $60 for Skyrim. Oblivion
has dropped down to $15 on Xbox on demand. I am guessing once the 720 and
PS4 are out and established Skyrim may drop down to that price. GOG.com is
the biggest example of this, or nintendo's virtual console. I remember
buying Mario Kart 64 for $50, now I can download it for $10.
I top out at 30 for most games as well...funny how that seems to be the
same for others. But anything by Betheda I'm there day 1 to support and
almost always buy deluxe versions. Hell I paid $120 for Fallout 3, that was
a flippin' bargain seeing as it's 5 years later and I am still playing it
from time to time and discovering new stuff about it.
In a few years of course it's value will go down because the demand for the
game will be down as well. So in a few years I wouldn't pay 60 USD for it
because it's an older game and a newer more improved Elder Scrolls game.
Although if I want a brand new copy while it's still a brand new game I
will happy pay 60 USD for it, which I already have.
In Europe everything is more expensive, and we love to moan about it but
always conveniently forget that throughout most of Europe people are paid
more for their labour. You can't possibly make a comparison based solely on
exchange rates when the dollar is so weak compared to the euro and pound
sterling.
i hardly ever buy a Brand New game at 60 so i won't pay 70 that's too much
expecially with this Day-One DLC and the other DLC that comes out like with
Call of Duty where you pay 60 bucks and turn around have to spend another
60 bucks on maps a few months later...no that's bullshit and gouging your
prices
As a console gamer who plays every day, I only drop $60 on my MOST wanted
games. I'm talking maybe twice a year. I would definitely pay $70 for those
games if I had to. But, in the long run, I would probably buy a few less
games over the console's life cycle if the standard price became $70.
At $70 a game better be amazin on and offline, no season pass bs, no
"always on" internet crap, dlc needs to be free for the most part, or sell
the game cheap and charge dlc. A game just has to be that good and have
enough playtime and replay value for me to consider such a price.
I'd pay $70 for a Rockstar game, but that's it really. They're the only
games I really love playing and I know are worth it, both in scale and
quality. There are others that I don't buy at launch on principal, just in
case they're shit, but Rockstar is so consistent I trust them.
If games start costing $70 then people will stop buying games. It is
simple. Not everyone will stop, but your average casual gamer will not be
able to invest so much on an impulse buy. Hopefully publishers will realize
that a price hike will only discourage people from buying.
If new games were 40 usd, id buy more. New games here in Hawaii are $62.99
usd at gamestop and $59.99 at wal-mart. If they went to 70 it'd actually be
73-74 with tax. Anyways, I would stop gaming if that happened. Well at
least on the next gens.
I agree with everyone here. No game in this world is worth more then an
eating in a mediocre restaurant. I mean what could an interactive medium
possibly have to offer that could be better then sitting on a table eating
a steak with potatoes?
Hamza, just sayin', is totally gay. Especially for his reasoning of
anything really. He's the DBZ fusion of NieroG & JohnathanH with a dash of
WDafoe. I'm calling you out bro! Get back on podtoid before I strangle you!
GAH!
I'd pay 70 for cod or elder scrolls or a R* game or something like the last
of us (naughty dog) but all the other not triple a titles I would wait
on... So yeah it's a "reasonable" price as long as that damn dlc is included
Here that question should change to ...... Are you a Fucking RETARD enough
to buy a $70 AAA game? not that bullshit...no will spend $70 for AAA
everyone will just wait til it get lower price or just won't buy it.
oh, you're German. Ja wir zahlen auch mal bis 80 Euro für ein neues Spiel.
Guck dir die Amazon oder GameStop Preise an. Deswegen kaufe ich seit 2
Jahren nur in UK Stores, und weil da alles ungeschnitten ist! :)
