Religion in America #48 "America's Religions," Ch. 52: Islam in the United States
In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we explore the themes discussed in the textbook for the class ...
I'm not all that happy with how cursory these chapters covering other
religions are in the textbooks -- but, given the constraints of the 15 week
semester, and a lot of material to cover, whatayagonnado? Really, Religion
in America would be a good year-long course.
I do know quite a bit -- but that's like saying I've wandered around a number of halls and rooms in a massive edifice!I looked it over and bookmarked it -- thanks for supplying the link -- it looks like some excellent reading!
+Gregory B. Sadler //www.muslimphilosophy.com/hmp/ Here is a pdf copy of a fantastic book on Islamic Philosophy I got in Pakistan way back in 2005. Covers loads of Philosophic/Theological Disciplines e.g. Mu'tazilites Ash'arites etc. I'm sure you probably know plenty on the subject already, but it's a great source in any case!
+Gregory B. Sadler In regards to Muslim scholars, you might direct your questioner to your videos on Aristotle - since people like Averroes, Avicenna and others held him in great regard (coining "The Teacher" epithet), preserving and translating his works, and expanding on his ideas within an Islamic context. These, together with others like Kalam, are (as I understand it) primarily Islamic philosophers concerned with metaphysics - rather than Islamic theologians concerned with interpretation of the Qur'an (Koran), Sunnah and Hadith - and the implications for Muslim life and worship.
I'm glad you enjoy the videos so much! So, Islamic philosophers and theologians. . . I've been asked about that before. The main issue is more or less one of time -- which itself is a factor of money (since one has to earn an income).I've already got a few other projects underway -- the Half-Hour Hegel, the Existentialism series (which I hope to finish up with, more or less, this summer), and there's a few other things I've got "on deck" as well (including videos on one of those Christian guys who indeed did engage (at least some) Muslim authors, Thomas Aquinas. . . .
As a Muslim I'd just like to say I greatly enjoy all of your videos, and am always looking forward to the newest ones. On a side note, is there any chance you'd make a few videos about the great Islamic theologians throughout history, many of whom had influenced some of the greatest Christian theologians. There is quite a large bit of common ground between Islamic and Christian beliefs, and I'd really be interested in hearing your take on this, and your understanding of those Islamic philosophers and theologians.
