I have the same thing happening to my stock 5sfe Toyota celica.
I have replaced the battery, the spark plugs, the spark leads, changed the
oil, oil filter, even the fuel pump. I don't want to keep replacing parts
for no reason if it is something simple.
One day the car lost a bit of power driving along the highway. Then it made
a loud whirring sound and in second gear slowing to a stop the engine just
stopped. Tried to crank it and it makes that same noise... Just won't
start. I've looked on all videos, Toyota forums... No answer to the
problem.

go to the distributor i did the same thing i just fixed mines i put the old
distributor bac on i had a new one and i thought it was all the other parts
i replaces but it was the distributor all the time call if u want my name

You also may need to adjust the distributor I had to turn mine counter
clock wise till it started

Yup distributor my 95 did the same thing I took sand paper to the leads in
my distributor
