Where are England going wrong? Rooney? Hodgson? Or something much deeper? | Guardian Football Show

I think people criticise England far too much. What Roy is doing at the moment, playing very young players with great potential, yet who need time to develop that potential, is exactly right. Sterling and Sturridge are extremely promising talents, Welbeck is about to gain a wealth of experience at Arsenal, Baines and Cahill are world class (and there are some very exciting young defenders coming through), Barkley is the perfect midfield quantity, and Henderson is increasingly impressive. What perhaps needs to change is the formation (IMO: to something mirroring Liverpool), and Rooney will need to prove himself over the coming qualifying campaign - I'm certain Hodgson has the minerals to drop him if required. I absolutely abhor people like Redknapp coming out saying the players don't care or don't have the passion. They need time to gel and improve, and opponents who represent a real challenge. English fans need to keep the faith sometimes, their temperament at the moment is a disgrace and does more harm than good.

With regards to the structure of English football at club level however, I agree there needs to be some changes. What's encouraging is that the current English team is still an exciting prospect despite that. I'm with Jon Wilson on this one.

I honestly don't think we need to be worried about the money aspect or the fact that players don't go abroad much. England are never going to be in a world cup match and we go "ughhh, if only we had a player that has experience in Italy". The geography of italy does nothing for football, so why would being in Italy somehow be better? Well the only real answer is coaching. That's what needs to be fixed. We need better technical coaching for youngsters and then those kids need to be able to get first team experience between the ages of 18-23. Loan deals are fine for the super talented players but the loanee receiving team has not benefit to develop a loaned in player. We need players to play for clubs that provide top class coaching and are willing to play them. I think this'll come down to more players being encouraged to stay away from the mega rich clubs that won't give them the chance. Southampton are a perfect example of being able to give youngsters a lot of playing time (partly because of the "benefit" of 2nd and tier football) which has greatly benefited players like Lallana, Shaw and JW-P.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jokseJDsrmk/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABU/CSpyLXIw0TA/photo.jpg?sz=64
I agree with Greg when he mentions coaching as the main reason because thats what comes first. Young players scouted by academies playing their own identity of football then moulded into something totally different, English coaches don't have or not allowed the time to add enough technique and flair in order to enhance what that player might already have naturally. Far to much emphasise put on size and power.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-h0xinzmaMKE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAsA/NMB6DvwutCA/photo.jpg?sz=64
Amazing how Roy Hodgson's name wasn't mentioned once. Amazing how he receives very little criticism. He is a static, stubborn, and tactically inept manager. I think blaming players and English mentality is really short sighted. Defensively they are getting a bit long in the tooth but the attacking talent is undoubtably there and they will be for years to come. Perhaps a more engaged and sophisticated manager could do the national team a world of good.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Egx0n1YraPU/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAGE/vvIft7IhE0c/photo.jpg?sz=64
We all have an opinion on Roy here but we wanted to look at the questions that are rarely asked, or at least asked less. But I think where we all agree, is that the solutions are much longer term than a change of manager.

i am more convinced everyday that this man is planning to be England's national coach after Hodgson. And he is doing it by building a reputation plus also making sure his players become core members of the national team. True he might not be the best ever, but probably nobody knows about developing or finding english talent than him. Thanks to this guy, there is some actual depth on the national squad. If Tottenham have a huge season in 1 or 2 years. Don't be surprised if this guy becomes the national coach.

Used the incorrect formation/players at Inter. He had that team for about 6 months. The team that won UCL in 2010 Had 8 defenders, Sneijder and Milito. Same goes for Porto. 6 of the starting 11 players were Portuguese starting international players. Portugal in 2004 was an amazing team. Sorry Mourinho fans, but the 2004 triumph is not THAT special. Thats like taking 6 starters of the German national team and winning the UCL with them. Not THAT difficult, even if the other 5 were all Aston Villa players. Otherwise, this video was very enjoyable!

+Agent. K.Mm! Very solid point! Let's see who they lost to: Casillas, Ramos, Modric, Di Maria, Benzema, Xabi Alonso, Bale, Marcelo, etc. etc. and a certain 3-time world player of the year...Now lets take a look at 2004: Keep in mind the 6 Portuguese starting international players (back when Portugal was a MAJOR world power in football). And they went up against Monaco who had ZERO starting international players (Giuly and Plasil were the only two international players, neither of which started for their international team). In todays terms, this is like Barcelona or Bayern beating the likes of Shaktar Donetsk, or Leicester (NOT INCLUDING Vardy or Mahrez who start for England and Algeria) next year in the CL final... If anything the sheer fact that Monaco reached the 2004 final is far more impressive than Porto winning it. Thanks.

+R.eese.2D2 Bayern couldn't win UCL in 2014 although they had German national team starters: lahm, boateng, schweinsteiger, kroos, Muller, nuer. That's 6. So it's difficult and special to win a trophy!
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-VnWkn7gshiY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABE/EqaE0GVZPks/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Agent. K.I'm talking in terms of champions league. So from your argument,Barcelona had 7 of the starting 11 of Spain's side, not the other way around. So in that context, 2012 was a major failure for Barcelona as they failed to win the CL that year with that massive of a squad.

He has to go to Manchester United. I don't particularly agree with his style or his ethos but he's the only one who can prevent Pep Guardiola from achieving world domination. United NEED him to remain a the biggest club in Manchester.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WaJkKGCUM6Q/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAb8/7eWds3HCLa4/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Supertomiman It's hard to see that with the resources he'll have at his disposal. I really wanted van Gaal to be successful but it just hasn't worked out. Mourinho is needed. Woodward is a complete fraud of a man.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kXnfT3JO5r4/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABM/VvDCIn471vk/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jordan Griffin Like the man says, Guardiola might still prove to be the next Fabio Capello. But we don't know that yet, and I wouldn't dare take the risk. Mourinho in, Van Gaal and Woodward out. Also, after living under LVG for 2 years I doubt players would have any issues with Mourinho's methods, after all anything is better than the 'Philoshophy'.

+Knives Millions You raise a few good points here and I cannot be arsed going through them all and giving my opinion. What I will say is that Barcelona had problems on and off the pitch in the year before Pep. The players we see now were not at the level before he took charge. Certainly not Xavi and Iniesta, and despite the number of appearances certainly not Messi, look at the stats before and after. You have to remember that Pep got rid of Ronaldinho and Deco, and was forcing out Eto'o but chose otherwise after the preseason he had, he instantly wanted to put his own stamp on things by forcing out big names, signing Dani Alves and promoting Busquets and Pedro.Regarding the Champions League semi-final, Bayern were missing a lot of key players and the players Pep fielded were not able to execute his game plan, certainly not in the attacking organisation nor in transistions.Lucho is a bang average manager blessed with the best front three of this generation, maybe even in history. Adding Suarez to that team has given him a career. His style of football doesn't fit the Barca DNA in my opinion, Barcelona don't look a coached side in the same way they did under Guardiola - and he's extremely lucky that with no Xavi and an in decline Iniesta that Busquets has been able to step up and take on the mantle and become the best midfielder in the world. Imagine Guardiola's Barca with that front three? I didn't rate Klopp at Dortmund and the calibre of players at Liverpool is much lower. Pep Guardiola will come into City and win 3/3 titles, unless United get Mourinho. Pellegrini has/will land 2/3 which is a great return. I think Guardiola's skills can be tested by his record in Europe; won it twice and guarantees a semi final finish, will be interesting to see how he will fare with City who have been apathetic towards the Champions League but I believe he will create history and land their first European Cup.Whilst you think I'm up his arse and maybe even overrating him I want you to know that I'm a Manchester United fan. There is no bias in what I'm saying and it pains me that he will be at the Etihad next season. I was dying to be our manager, and my opinion of him won't change now that he's City's boss.

+Jordan Griffin The squad was different yes, as is normal, but many of the so called Key players were there under Rijkaard, Messi was already an established first team player by the time Guardiola got there, he had 40 apps in Rijkaard's last season, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Valdes, Henry and Eto, all of them present in Rijkaard's team, Henry in particular was brought in to replace Ronaldinho who was already falling out of form at the time and that was a major event that led to Barcelona's form as a team to drop, if Messi suddently went partying and lost his form then Barcelona would again "struggle" with a second place and a CL semi final.Speaking of going out to the team that ends up winning the Champions League, in Rijkaard's last season they went out in the Semi Finals, to Manchester United, remember that team? the season when Ronaldo broke all sorts of records and won the Ballon D'or? Manchester United won the Champions League that year as well.Again, you're not a starter for a club like Barcelona for over 4 years straight without being considered world class... anyone would've paid Barcelona millions for Xavi, to me that makes him world class, you have to remember the people he was playing with though, Eto, Henry, Ronaldinho, Deco, Messi, it's hard to be considered top 3 when your team has that kind of star power, and the fact of the matter is Xavi had 54 apps under Rijkaard, fucking RONALDINHO got 26... he's Barcelona's go-to man under Rijkaard, does that make him an amateur of some kind? am i crazy saying he was a world class player already?Regarding the Bayern win, what happened when Bayern was demolished 3-0 at Camp Nou in 2015? If he was the reason for Barcelona being so successful they wouldn't have bounced back so quickly and so strong, and would surely not kick his new team in the ass this season despite their domination of the German league. Luis Enrique struggled at Roma did an average job at Celta and then goes to Barcelona and guess what? he wins everything. It's not that difficult with the way the team is already established. He doesn't need to manage a crystal palace mate, City will do just fine, i just want to see him somewhere where the team he is coaching is not already one of the teams dominating the league, the BPL, unlike La Liga and the Bundesliga is not a two club monopoly, so it should be interesting enough for us to get a better measure of his skills as a manager, everyone thought Klopp was going to walk into Anfield and destroy everyone, that's not what happened was it? Football is full of surprises and a manager is only as good as his players. There are no magicians
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WaJkKGCUM6Q/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAb8/7eWds3HCLa4/photo.jpg?sz=64
They won it 3 years before he arrived. The team that won it in 2006 was completely different to the team that won it in 2009. No one considered Xavi world class pre Guardiola don't talk shit. By Barcelona's standards they struggled, domestically and in Europe, the 7-0 humiliation by Bayern springs to mind, also mentioning that they didn't even make the semis the year before last. Whoever knocked Guardiola's side out in Europe won it that year, probably not a coincidence. I'm not treating him like a God, but there's no doubt that he is a master tactician and he brought a style of football that the world never saw before, forget the players for a moment that is his doing, his system and style of play that transcended the game. It's easy for him to go to the best clubs in the world now because he earned that right at Barcelona, why should he manage a team like Crystal Palace to prove his worth to some virgin moaning about him via YouTube?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y7wvCNzv5GQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/hlu7m7S7KuI/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jordan Griffin And won the Champions League just 2 years before he arrived... Xavi was not world class? wtf? are you serious? He was always one of Barcelona's star players he was just in the shadow of Ronaldinho as was everyone else, also Rijkaard was the one who oversaw Messi's development and brought him to the first team to begin with, how is Barcelona struggling? finishing 3 points second to Atlético's first place one season then dominating the next? Is that what you call struggling? He is a good manager treating him like a managerial God when he's never had a season at a club that doesn't already usually dominate the league without him is ridiculous.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WaJkKGCUM6Q/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAb8/7eWds3HCLa4/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Knives Millions Barcelona finished 3rd in the league before he arrived, he improved goals scored, goals conceded, the amount of wins, and reduced the number of defeats in comparison to the year before. Players like Xavi and Iniesta were not considered world class before he arrived and look at Messi's development during his time there. He made them the greatest team the world has ever seen and managers from other sports go to watch his training sessions to get an idea of his tactics. Look at the way Barcelona struggled after he left, that says all you need to know.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y7wvCNzv5GQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/hlu7m7S7KuI/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jordan Griffin Pep guardiola achieving world domination at City lol, you speak of the man as if he was a God, he's never coached a club that wasn't already brilliant before he got there... City might improve a little but i don't expect a revolution, i expect the same old City, deadly as it is, but the BPL will be Guardiola's biggest challenge by several miles.
