Japan Times Interview - The Future of Vlogging in Japan 日本語・英語字幕付き
//search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nc20100428br.html This is the video portion of responses to an interview I recently did for the Japan Times. Check the link ...
@ToLokyo Interesting thought about Japanese getting into vlogging. I
dunno... I still think people look at Bexta and her kin as being basically
self-created tarento doing something that for them is too scary to try.
This sounds weird, but I think what YouTube needs is more unattractive
talentless vloggers on, so that Japanese don't feel so self conscious
getting in and trying themselves (you know, like putting Nakai into
Smap...) For YouTube Japan, I guess that is the million $ question.
Totally agree mate, I think more & more people are moving away from the
traditional tv type scenario to places like youtube where they can access
info-tainment most appealing to them. Which they can take control in ways
traditional tv is only just starting to offer, such as pause, rewind & fave
(which is almost like recording to watch again later...But as you say, the
medium of online entertainment gives regular people a chance to have a go
foregoing corporate control, dick-tation ; P
Interesting that the focus on live stuff was UStream. Is there a reason why
UStream seems to have more attention than the others these days? I think
with Japanese people breaking out of the closed networks, it's just gonna
take a few more breakout stars coming out of YouTube that catch the general
public's attention. Some of the dancing girls like xbextahx seem to be
getting some attention outside of only the typical YouTube crowd. Hopefully
that'll help to draw more talent in. ^^
Last Sunday I attended a conference in Paris that was been transmitted
world wild via Ustream. This conference with the producer and character
design of the popular animes Serial Experimental Lain and Grey Wings, M Abe
and M. Ueda. I was in the public, near the stage, very close filming with
my camcorder. The !anchor actually got close me and showed my face but
really zoomed in!! My friends were all, "Hey, now every one in Japan knows
your face!", my reaction was Oh nooooooo!
@MicknFumi Amen! From where I see it as well, while the interactive nature
of YouTube can also make it more perilous and require some more thought
before entering, it's exciting to think that my kid will have the
opportunity to not just enjoy drooling in front of the tv like I did in my
day, but to actually take a show he likes and figure out how to make
something like it himself. It's great that it's a medium with the ability
to re-engage our couch potato brains. Peace
Very true that culturally it will take a while for Japanese to put their
face on camera. There's also the whole "What will they think of me?" kinda
of judgmental reaction they're scared of. Perhaps doing something that is
remote to お笑い、コント style, or if the person makes a fun/funny video that may
draw more attention. I know there's one guy on here that talks about just
plain ol' stuff, like the new camera he bought. He seems to have a pretty
big following.
@ToLokyo Yeah, I noticed that too and talked about it a bit more in the
full response I did that I linked. It's not that it's new, so much as
commercial internet media companies are realizing the opportunity that the
medium offers to let them really compete with big advantages over some
forms of tv - it is those companies chasing that who are putting in the
money and publicity. I think Ustream is very lucky to have good timing, and
iPhone compatibility.
@AndySan Haha, good catch. It's funny, if I was just thinking of myself
talking to other vloggers, I don't think I would think twice about saying
it straight up just like that, but thinking of this being for the Japan
Times audience and a lot of those readers possibly not as familiar with the
term, for some reason I felt compelled to spell it out more clearly like
that. Probably over-thinking it... And please BE PICKY! I appreciate the
feedback :D Peace
@yumyumsesame agreed - that's the cool thing about this. Ideas like yours
(we NEED this...) is where all the other opportunities will arise. The TV
Guide doesn't make as much as the big networks it gives info on, but it
does pretty well. There will probably be a bunch of blogs, vlogs springing
up with people trying to fill that void when they see it is there. I think
like YouTube, the world of live streaming will be a bit bewildering at
first :S Peace
There needs to be a guide, like a tv guide, so you can see what shows are
streaming live online and request reminders when your favorite show is
about to start. We have a tv show here in oz called Q&A. I often like to
read/post comments on the twitter feed #qanda while watching it on the tele
and it can be a lot of fun. I think that sort of interactivity will become
more and more common. It's a great way to meet people with similar
interests.
@Hikosaemon Thanks mate. The following you and Eric have is impressive! I
just get a bit frustrated that YT don't give us a chance to get exposed to
the bigger audience. Our dude in Tokyo is focused on bringing in more
partners (which is cool) but it would be nice to have them spending just a
little time promoting us, considering how much time we all put in to it...
and considering what does make the front pages... Anyhoo... !
@BlkUnk Yeah man, we're already doing it. It would be great if my kid's
generation can be more proactive and creative with visual media than the
20th century generations that sat passively in front of one-way
transmitting radios and televisions. That change from a broadly passive to
a proactive and creative populace is going to be one of the biggest human
revolutions there will ever be, and we're at the front of it.
@TheJapanChannelDcom hehe, well, as you know, I tend to be more of a glass
half full type. You should give yourself more credit - your channel gets
much more views than mine does. Given that you're a partner, it might not
be much, but there wouldn't be many people in Japan doing better off
YouTube than you I don't think (probably less than 20 people) - smell the
roses mate! Peace
Nice job, brother. I think it says a lot about Japan that 99% of the most
viewed and featured stuff on YT Japan is just anime and stuff copied from
TV... nice to hear your more positive outlook about it though. As for we
foreigner channels in Japan.. we are really the bottom dwellers of YT. Even
the most viewed and subscribed of us are insignificant compared to the
front pagers..
great vid hiko. I definitely agree that the community is something we
haven't seen before and is going to take off into something we can't even
imagine in the future. I'm glad to be a part of it! Thanks for motivating
me to vlog in the first place! I always appreciate whatever you have to
say, because I know it is always words of wisdom! =) Cheers!
@BusanKevin lol, nono, this one the credit goes to Kyle from the Japan
Times who thought of the questions that got me thinking. They were pretty
cool thought provoking questions. Apparently there will be some others in
this series so it will be interesting to see other people's takes. Peace
mr. Hiko--sorry to alert you to this, but i felt you should know--there are
individuals getting completely sloshed over your shoulder even as you
endeavour to entertain & enlighten us--mr. nichi-bei is, for example, on
his 3rd Suntory whiskey @3:55....(amongst many others)...

+Marc Druten Hi Marc, they put a lot of empty words and human crocodile tears to shame. The film is powerful and the story heart rendering, have a great new week with your beautiful team :-)
+Frederickforlife Jamesi saw the film once and i was crying like a baby for 2 hours and totally upset for one week, i think i''l never see it twice, although i own a mighty Akita Inu myself ;-)
@BusanKevin Hey man, sorry about the hassles with th e taking down,
uploading and stuff - I edited to cram 18 minutes of verbal diarrhea into 5
and a half minutes, but I had to cut out a lot of points I wanted to make
to get there. Cheers for sitting through this :) Peace
@Hikosaemon -- LOL Thank you. Glad you could check it out. I get flack over
not revealing my identity sometimes, it was just interesting to hear that
in Japan people do this regularly.
Funny you mention anonymity. I post my videos anonymously as well.
