what a blast from the past! Steve Deyoung did have a flare for dramatics. I
think his keyboard was too loud at this concert, it just drowned out the
cool guitar riffs. I never knew the similarities that he shared with Freddy
Mercury. I too saw them in concert in 1978, I was a junior in high school.
hard to believe it now but they were considered a hard rock
band...Frisbies, lighters, and herb filled the entire arena.
+CapAnson12345 I agree on that. If Dennis had just left it at the album, no plays for a stage show they may have been okay. Even Dennis himself admits that he went too far with Kilroy.
Styx, possibly the most ugly and worse dressed men ever to grace the stages
of Rock and Roll. No matter what era, their clothes were out of style,
their hair was out of style, (really, afros on white guys?), the
military/cop mustache look, and again, finally, they were all just butt
ugly dudes.
+Steve Hoyland I agree, only the Eagles are up on that same level IMO. In Styx, I prefer the Shaw writing myself. DeYoung did "Come Sail Away" and "Babe"...their only number one in US. but he used that as his calling card for two decades . I heard an interview by Deyoung in the 90s, and he was STILL bragging about Babe. OK, dude, you had a number one, but I never liked Babe myself. My personal favorites...Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, Man in the Wilderness, Boat on the River, Renegade.. my favorites were written by Shaw. Those were the ones I belted in my Toyota Celica, steaming down the snowy roads in NY. And Tommy had some great ballads on later albums too, such as "Just Get thru this Night,: He's also a heck of a nice guy, by the way.
+RTHA300 By the way, I do have a first In Science History (Hull 1989) and a Masters In Political Science (OU 2001) so please, It's MR Hoyland If you don't mind. I didn't Insult you, despite the fact that you hide behind a ludicrous made-up name and spoke to me with contempt. I was very fair with you and expect the same In return. I "Sit back"for no man. I should Imagine you weren't even born when Styx were Rocking!!!
+RTHA300 Yes, I totally agree - all I was saying was that even without Dennis De Young, we still had a decent band? I wasn't being nasty or disagreeing with you! Let me explain.....without Dennis, Styx could never be the same, but we were still left with a decent band. It's clear to me that you're an Intelligent and thoughtful person so I hope we can agree a little?
hoyland, sit back and try to think about how many hits have styx had since dennis left. try to name a tour they headlined or even the stadium they played in without him.
+RTHA300 Thanks for your comment. Yes, I can at least partly agree with you there. But even without him we still have a bunch of superb Instrumentalists and I always considered Tommy Shaw almost his equal on Vocals. Of course, as I understand It, Dennis was the Major songwriter as well so yes I guess he will always, and should, be considered 'Mr. Styx', and quite rightly so.....I Just thought saying they suck without him was a little unfair, maybe?
