How to Connect Studio Monitors to Computer for Home Use

+Septimus Its not actually going through different processing, so its not really losing anything unless you are using bottom of the barrel flea bay connectors that are not even copper, aluminium or brass.
+Camilo Martinez Mmmm nice, i found some JBL controle one monitor speakers, they were 180 euros and now for 50 (refurbished ) Think im gonna buy them ;D
no what you see in this video is all that you need. the monitors and the cables. I feel like making an updated video with what I do now. ill do it during winter break.

@roxstar1 You still want to get monitor stands because you're sitting too
far back for their distance. You want your listening position to form an
equalateral triangle with the monitors. If you sit 4 feet back you want 4
feet between them for instance. Also you don't want to be turning them in
to face you, the tweeters have a wide dispersion and they need to be
perpendicular to your listening position. Otherwise you will get colored
sound and phase distortion.
Hi there, can you please give me a piece of advice, you said you can
connect the monitors through a 1/8 jack from the sound card and x2 1/4 jack
going in the each monitor. Will this generate a stereo sound without going
through a sound mixer first? I'm not very familiarized with studio monitors
and I got all confused reading the forums. Thanks, appreciated.
nice setup.., looks like you need more space or a bigger desk,i work in a
small space myself now. . i hope those bx5a's don't fall off your desk. i
have some of these monitors on the way myself, i'll be hooking them to my
m-audio delta 1010lt with the TRS rca to 1/4" connectors. will there be a
difference in sound quality between that and balanced xlr?
Im thinking about getting these the M-Audio Studiophile BX5 D2 Studio
Reference Monitors from the apple site. are the A's and the D2 the same? I
know nothing about setting these up. If I get these how do I set them up?
Do I have to buy the wires to connect the two speakers, then the aux cord
to the mac? or is everything included in the box?
I realize those are nearfield monitors, but they are a tad TOO near. I know
you are getting a bigger desk. When you do, set them up in an equal
triangular position from your listening spot. for example 4 ft apart and 4
ft from your head when seated, pointed towards each ear more or less.
I would recommend searching google for DIY ikea music studios - you can
easily create stands for those monitors that will separate them at the
proper angle so you can get that "sweet spot" for less than 30 bucks.
if i was you i wouldn't put those monitors like that, ur monitors are
partially hanging, looks like they may fall off with the vibration and
stuff bruv, how about a bigger table? cool set up though. peace
@calikiddable yep they are...well when u buy anything used ur takin a
risk...kinda 70/30...luckily the guy who sold em to me they were his son's
and he really didn't know their worth...thnx for watchin!
i haven't heard of the d2s...so i can't help you there...but i'm pretty
sure you'll need to buy cables and interface separately...go to your local
music store & they'll show you how to set em up.
@roxstar1 XLR is better quality than that silly headphone jack that you
use. you talk about quality, but you have your computer hooked up using
RCA?? wow..
an audio interface, with some xlr cables running to it will be much better.
Multitrack Recording - Set up Mixer and Interface to Computer
Multitrack recording (also known as multitracking or just tracking for short) is a method of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound ...
+noahbody Gee shucks mister! >blush<Aaah, its no problem, the answers are simple when you know and it didn't cost me anything to learn. Well if 'cost' doesn't include a career, wife, house etc! LOL
+Prince Westerburg that's really good information, I absolutely cant thank you enough! i'm the type who reads manuals, such as the jmp-1 and sees things in there and just assumes that's that proper way to do things. same with sound cards and various speaker emulators. I saw the guitarist from rush on a video say how he uses speaker emulators and then into the p.a. system and so I just assumed the emulator on the marshall was also the proper way for recording. man, you sure gave a real lesson and now I know better. would you be interested to make recording videos. i'll bet you will get zillions of hits. anyway, I'm real glad you answered, because frankly, lots of the posted videos seem to be the same information only presented slightly different, and with that I would have been struggling forever. thanks again Prince Westerburg, you are a very good man!
+noahbody First off, treat yourself to a USB recording interface, even a cheap pedal with USB will usually work as an interface - the sockets on your PC are meant for light domestic use over 5 years max so will wear out pretty quick. Also the sound quality of onboard chipsets is pretty dire with tons of noise - with nothing playing, turn the volume up full and put headphones on, then move the mouse - you can probably hear the graphics chipset working! If nothing else get / make yourself some breakout leads with maybe a nice heavy box with sockets on.And yes I will say it - Get a Mac! I got a MacMini for £69 which can run Logic and ProTools without timing issues. CuBase on PC killed my inner child. From memory, (its been 20 years) the JMP-1 has a master volume. Using the input gain to define the output is not how it's done on preamps. The output of the preamp should never be going to the mic input, its a line level output. Mic sockets expect around 100mV and line level is 1v, ten times as much. A Moog synth can stick out peaks of 6v which would fry your mic input. So make sure you have a decent level on the JMP-1 and use that master volume! For speaker emulation I copied the record output section from the Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp, its a simple circuit and works well (I used air cores inductors from old speaker crossovers) but software emulation can be done, analogue is always better, it takes a hideous amount of processing to emulate the volumetric functions of a speaker cabinet, the resonance of the wood, the charge / dissipation of the voice coil plus flux reaactance of the magnet etc. and thats before you deal with cone break up and surface feature micro-eddys causing temporal upper end harmonics. So most speaker emulations are just impulses, and that sucks. Using an inductor based analogue circuit is much nicer. /tech
+Prince Westerburg im getting off topic but maybe you can help me. i'm trying to record from a marshall jmp-1 preamp into the computer. one of the presents in the marshall is a really clean channel. when i plug the speaker emulator output left channel from the marshall into the microphone input on the laptop, i can record a nice undistorted sound with audacity. however, when i switch to a more distorted sound, like from a plexi, the output overloads the microphone input and i have to use the line input to not overload the sound recorder. i know from running the marshall thru an amp if i lower the gain and/or volume output from the marshall it does not sound the same. is there a better way to record direct to the computer such as with some type of mixer, or should i just get a microphone and mic the speaker cabinets. i'm actually surprised there is so much more signal coming from the distortion channels. i tried using a distortion pedal with the clean channel and that actually works pretty good for not overloading the input, but it does not sound as nice as the tube distortion. i am 100% novice at recording, other than a whole lot of trial and error, mostly error including when windows xp mutes the line input volume when i am changing jacks and the usb from the camcorder. also, can a mixer lower the output so that i can go into the microphone in the camcorder. i tried one of those attenuating wires with the line output from the hi-fi amplifier, and the wire did not attenuate enough. any tips or suggestions would be most welcome. thanks in advance.
+vacants89 Oh, no problems chap - I checked out your one video, I'm old school guitarist from when Metallica where some unknown band and we loved 'em! Yeah, for your kind of music, analogue summing will add a big dimension to the sound. You should have guitars as voices in a room, all in their distinct space. This means you can build up harmonies with everything sounding as is should and not digital noise. Great licks BTW! :o)
+vacants89 Ooh, no, its >REALLY< simple; You connect the ADAT interface via two optical TOSLink cables (send / return) and usually your interface detects it and thats it, you have 8 extra in/outs!If you have Word Clock then best to use that too so both boxes are clock locked together. If you can ever get yourself any RME kit, you'll never look back - rock solid performance, beautiful sound and the best clocking anywhere.
one more question...if you had 8 inputs on an interface with ADAT connection as well, and wanted to use a desk for analog summing / mixdown...wouldn't you have 8 physical inputs and 8 digital from the ADAT? How is it ADAT physically connected or does it need to be? I'm really trying to get my head round this thank you for your help so far!
+PATRICK CASSIDY Yeah, basically what I've turned up is that traditionally you record flat, just levelled for the tape (remembering that tape has really nice natural compression as does vinyl which is why albums like Kraftwerk's Radioactivity don't work on CD) then you mix down i.e. Play back all your tape tracks through the mixer and set your EQs and compressors, outboard gear and produce a stereo master OR you'd be 'bouncing down' i.e. Reducing say your drums from 8-10 tracks to two.Ain't it funny that we have to search out how to do this now! :D So, if you replace the tape machine with your interface then using an ADAT interface for the mixer means you still have lots of options for DI to the interface or other external preamps.Record direct to the interface - Sure, whatever rocks your boat man, I'd go through a desk or preamps as generally they are quieter or have loads more character. I'm using RME so its suooooper clean and if I record guitar I want some old electronics in there first.
+Prince Westerburg All advise is welcome I find this stuff mega confusing...don't mean to sound dumb but if you got an 8 channel audio interface wouldn't you be using the preamps on the interface and not the desk when multitrack recording? And would you use the ADAT when outputting audio from logic back into the desk???
+vacants89 Thats what I'm trying to do also. I know I'm advising you but I've been researching this for just 24 hours! :D What I have found useful is looking up 'Connect mixer to tape machine' type searches as effectively we are replacing the tape machine. It peaked my interest as I got to have a look round AIR Studios in London a couple of years ago and I wanted to know how they got their 160 channel Neve talking to the ProTools rig. In the end it was overwhelming and I forgot to ask! I mean, how many studios have a fully working pipe organ in and plate reverbs used by the Beatles?!?! :o)
No don't need all 24, would like to use it for multitrack recording (8tracks at once would be more than enough for me) and also for mixdowns for logic projects, eg. Having enough i/o to route tracks from logic in to the desk and mixdown on desk
+vacants89 Do you need all 24 channels at once? The point of a mixer is to sum signals so you probably want 8 at most on a drum kit - even with a symphony orchestra you only need about 6 channels. So the Behringer ADA8000 is probably the cheapest interface with the best reputation.
thanks anything in particular to recommend? I have a 24 channel ghost analog mixer looking for cheapest way if multitrack recording into mac, not necessarily all 24 channels
+vacants89 Use an ADAT inteface and use it just for the mixer, that leaves the rest of the rig free. On Mac we have the advantage of FireWire which is a lot less prone to errors, pops and clicks.

I bought a pair of these some years ago based on your review and some other
opinions I found on the web. They work great for mixing my music (mostly
hard rock). Since I generally don't need too much bass response, they're
usually enough for me. In case I need more bass in a particular song I use
a subwoofer. Sound card/audio interface is also important. I remember I
upgraded back then and after that I heard a huge difference with these same
monitors. Headphones are a great tool for hearing some details, too. Thank
you.
Just bought new edition of these monitors after this review. I think they
sound VERY good for this amount of money (400usd) But you need to position
them right in order to hear all soundtage right in front of you. If these
are your first monitors after listening to multimedia speakers sound may be
a little bit flat for your ears, but then you will find that you can hear
EVERYTHING as it was recorded in studio. Sounds without any distortion on
loud and low levels.Excellent buy, highly recommended
Hi. Great job! I have a question ? I have a chance to purchase the old bx6
monitors and I heard you refer to a feature that they had that is not on
the deluxe .So my question is do you think the deluxe model is better than
the old model ? I can get the old pair brand new for 140.00 and the deluxe
for 200.00 brand knew. I also can get krk 5 for 99.00 for one( they are a
restock from krk them self ) dont know if you got a chance to hear them but
what would you purchase out of the three? thankyou
hey man I was greatly surprised at how good they actually are for the
price. have a few pieces of equipment by m-audio and they're great. They
handle frequencies pretty well you get a good range. i was using some 7
year old logitech speaker and sub set before these and the quality
difference is phenomenal. a really good set of studio monitors. if you have
the money though the bx8 the next model up in the range are superbe. but
money wise and for what i need them for the bx5 d2's are prefect.
I have these, very clear speakers for mastering. The bass depends on the
room, in my old hard wall room the bass as with any speakers leaked to
other rooms. In a sound proofed room the bass is brilliant. As regards to
frequencies below 56 hz. 20 hz and below is inaudible, 20 hz to 60 hz is
feel only. but feel will go all the way to 100 region. So if you crank them
you will feel it. Most mixing software users apply low cuts to 0 - 50 hz
anyway. If you cant mix at home with these, you cant mix!
To anyone thinking of using these for entertainment, don't bother. They
have very little bass and sound harsh. You have to push up bass frequencies
on your EQ a lot to get a decent amount of bass from these. They also sound
like crap with most low bit compressed music, as they should since they are
monitors. Definitely not suitable for anything other than monitoring. For
entertainment, you are much better off buying budget hi-fi speakers like
Dali Zensor 1, which are superb for that purpose.
I got these yesterday after listening to these and all the others he
mentioned in this video. Im a heavy metal musician and after listening to
some metal at the store I found these to sound the best. the KRKs were
good, low end didnt sound as good to me as bx5s. Yamahas had no low end.
and the MR5s were good too, but the low end didnt seem tight enough for me.
They appeared to have too much boom for my liking. For metal I noticed the
bx5s to be the best choice suited to my tastes.
People always talk about which monitors are good and which are crap. For
every one that says a particular monitor is nice, another will call it
garbage. But, I'll tell you that room acoustics are about just as important
as the monitors themselves. You have to have decent acoustics to even tell
if a monitor is accurate or not. Some think that they can slack on treating
the room. If you think that, you have alot to learn, generally speaking...
I have the BX5a....my buddy just bought these, the BX5a Deluxe....they are
they ducks nuts man!!! Honestly....we set them up against a bunch of other
monitors in the same range, including some KRK's and a few of the other
monitors in this vid....these things blew all the of them away...it's like
the sound goes right into your head, bypassing your ears...really changes
the way you'll listen to ya tunes.
I use these speakers every day and they are amazing. My room, however, not.
The imaging is very good, but IMO could be better, but that may be my room.
I would recommend them for both mixing and listening. Also keep in mind, if
BT mixed a 110 piece orchestra on them I thing they are good enough. Oh,
and why would he talk about other monitors in the review if he is getting
paid?
I've owned these, m-audio av40's, krk v6's, and my current monitors, the
equator D5's, which blow them all to hell. These speakers are developed by
strictly engineers, not a marketing team. I am not affiliated with equator,
just one damn happy customer. I think they deserve much more attention than
any krk or m-audio monitor in this price range. EQUATOR D5, GOOGLE IT!
A quick question, i'm considering a few speakers at the moment These ones,
Alesis Monitor One MK2, KRK RP5, Yamaha HS50M (although the yamaha's are a
bit more pricey), what would you suggest. I need good imaging and "tight,
low end" none of this muddy stuff, I;ve spotted a pair of these BX5A's for
£160 ? Thanks and great video, helped me a lot.
i bought these bought 4 months ago just for general use music/gaming/movies
and there excellent very loud and the sound holds up through the volume,
only thing is the low frequencys seem to be louder than the bass might be
to do with the monitor aspect though. Good value imo though nothing on this
price beats my old logitech crap ;p
I am just a MOM who loves music! I recently purchased an ASUS Laptop
equipped w/ SRS Labs Premium installed...My issue is I want a sound system
that emulates or is 5/7.1 Dolby range..w/o the thump shaking...Can u please
advise me on the best (bose) type speakers to purchase? Ur help is greatly
appreciated! Thanks In Advance! :)
I have a pair of the BX5...convinced my mate to get the BX5a Deluxe...they
sound great!! Would definitely upgrade to these....did a side by side with
a lot of the examples at the end of the vid...the only ones that sounded
(in my opinion) as good or better were the Yamaha's. These are a great
speaker.
Hey sonicstate, love the review. I'm currently in the market of getting new
speakers, though I'm a little budget conscious as I'm in college, I have
been looking at these, the KRK's or the audioengines, I listen to many
varieties of music though mainly mainstream. What would you recommend?
thanks!
@Journalistification No i didnt get to try the bx8a because i knew i
wouldnt have the room for that size speaker. I only tested 5". Though Im
sure theyre better than the bx5a as they would probably have more low end.
I would say try out the 8s if you have room for em, theyre pretty big.
The 8 inch versions of these monitors are our primary monitors. Solid
build, nice response, good imaging. They arent totally flat, but no studio
monitors are - that's a marketing tool. But these speakers are great and
they seem to be overlooked. For the price, you really cant go wrong.
@guitarmasterjs Did you try/listen to the BX8a Deluxe by any chance? im
looking to buy a pair of good monitors to help with clear sound when mixing
in my room and i've heard good things about both the Bx5a and Bx8a deluxe,
so im unsure of which ones to buy lol
I own a set, and his assessment is acurate. I got the pair for $250 on sale
at guitar center. For the price, I think they are exceptionally clear on
the high end, but are lacking in bass response versus the Bx8's, for the
price, they are a great buy.
@sonicstate I just bought the bx 5 speakers and i bought an stp-201 cable
and only i can only hear 1! they both work becasue when i change the cables
around u can hear it. So i went to buy another cable and it does the same
wat should i do????
@littlemimus they have a flat response, so i mean it shows true bass.
nothing crazy. if you're looking to get some like that, get some bookshelf
speakers or something, they will be cheaper and better for what you're
looking for!
@hightide791 you have to buy an external audio card.. that way you can plug
the speakers into the both output channels of this audio card, and you can
connect your laptop to the card with the usb plug given with the audio card
@frankdbruin There are tons of different kinds of adapters that you can
use. Are you wanting to plug straight into your computer via 1/8 jack? If
so, you can get a Hosa 1/8th in to two 1/4in TRS for like 6 bucks. Works
great.
