GTC 2016: Self-Driving Car Demo, Roborace and Wrapping Up (part 11)
NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang shows a demo of a self-driving car platform, called DaveNet, that uses deep learning to teach a car how to drive, at the GPU ...
Self-driving cars are hype. The business model is self-defeating. 40%
unemployment. So who will this car be sold to? Price is about the same as a
supercar. The middle-class will be largely wiped out. Generations of people
will stay homeless not consuming products.
Close eyes. Leap. Hope for the best....
This ain't gonna end well.
+Nyqua Xyla As i stated not everybody has creativity or have the aptitude to be skillfully employed. Go to McDonald's - see that 50 year old burger flipper? Do you think that's her dream job? SAVINGS doesn't translate into more benefits for healthcare. Healthcare and education is funded by income taxes paid by EMPLOYED people. If all these millions of people become unemployed the government loses revenue to pay for healthcare, pensions etc. If the government decides to raise income taxes on the people who are skillfully employed in order to fun pensions etc then those people will lose disposable income and further destroy commerce throwing more and more people out of work. That's the laws of economics. That truck driver was earning money and paying it forward to support local businesses. You can't argue with some abstract suggestion that these truckers are extremely "creative and passionate" - what the heck kind of job are you exactly describing anyway? Btw, my dad built airplanes for a living before he immigrated to Canada. His credentials were not recognized here but he had a family to support and so he had to work at an unskilled job. Those jobs are essential to keep our economy running and keeping unskilled people employed and contributing to the economic engine. The experts are right - the middle-class will be wiped out for decades and the rich will get richer while the number of poor will increase substantially. You will be poor so forget about buying this car. Even if you are talented you'd be competing for limited number of jobs against thousands of candidates who may be better and willing to work for less money. People want to turn a blind eye to the consequences waiting but they shouldn't. There is one possible solution. As a civilization we may have to move into the next epoch of civilization where people don't work for a living. Those that do get extra perks like cars and bigger houses while the rest live in small studio condos and use bikes to get around and eat soilent green. No more Mexican holidays unless you're skilfully employed.
+Marius Tomas If machines come in and take all the boring jobs; that'll be a good thing right.. Then we can start producing goods at a much higher efficiency.. And the resulting savings or surplus can be used to provide the unemployed people with benefits such as free healthcare and education, while they are being trained with skills suitable for a different job; a job that hopefully involves human creativity and passion
+Rata 4 U I totally understand your point. But if you look to history when some dramatic new technology appear there was always fears that millions will be unemployed. I think it's government and companies mission not to leave those people empty handed. It's not like they are stupid like stones. With got or company help they can learn and evolve with some new profession. Surely truck driver won't become computer engineer nor he will be trash car guy. Idk personally what new professions will appear but I being optimistic. Surely it will take some time but it the end everything will stabilize I think.
+Marius Tomas I'm saying it's displacing millions of people who don't have the aptitude for such processes. Where should they go? I have a friend who is dyslexic who became a long haul truck driver - not by choice. He'd love nothing more than to return from work each night to his family but these are the cards life dealt him. What advice would you give to him? That's my only point. I hope you're right that millions upon millions of research positions will be needed - at least we'll know that eventually the economy will recover enough to support the unemployed/unemployable.
+ProteusX2 The sad truth is that capitalism needs unskilled labour. Not everybody has the aptitude to learn at x level. Also, regarding refinement, my mom has a hot water tank that's 40 years old. They WON'T build those models again because it's self-defeating. Capitalism revolves around selling a cycle of quantity - not quality. It creates jobs and paper wealth. The experts are now warning governments that this technology will put millions of people out of work. There's only a handful of people who'll have jobs in research but the rest will be left in the lurch. There will be huge losses in the middle class careers. I do insurance so I won't be needed anymore. Then what? Go to university to become an engineer? Mechanic or body shop mechanic? None of those jobs will be required. Not even the traffic cops etc. It will create a chain reaction collapsing the entire economic engine that's dependent on consumerism. No job - no consuming. No consuming - government revenue collapses and cuts happen along with deflation. The experts are asking governments around the world to prepare themselves for deep poverty. Prepare to by creating social housing to avert souring homelessness.
That's a bit of a stretch don't you think? Self-driving (race)cars aren't the only application for this technology. It can also be applied to medical or market research, and create employment by pointing to new solutions that require refinement, engineering, manufacturing, and manual labor. I realize I'm speculating, but I believe my scenario is at least as likely as yours!
you can't drive it will drive itself. When it done serving it will not obey your commands because it will have self learning AI.
