Hi Eric,I have soundtrax GN1000 decoder.If I change the CV2,CV5, and CV6 as
you did,can I expect a slow movement as you did or is this only for these
LOC sound's.Also, are your speakers in series or parrelel? Great review my
friend!
+John Genovese Hi John, The Tsu only has starting voltage cv2 & end voltage cv5. To really tune the Tsu for excellent slow speed movement, you may need to alter cv212 to a lower value too. start with 60 and work up or down based on your results.
Flames, Smoke and Snow - SNC 8524 Struggles to Haul Loads out of Saratoga, NY
On Febuary 4, 2015, Saratoga and North Creek RR was planning on running 15 loads north to Corinth for storage but snow and steep grade made that task ...
Great review! I was interested to hear what ESU Loksound sounded like.
Very impressive. I love to RS series; but, form a years of production
table I have in one of my old MR Magazines, the RSs were not listed for
1941. My layout is late Summer 1942. If you can verify the RS1 for '41,
the Atlas model will definitely be on the PC Rwy! (That article from MR is
buried in my library, but I forgot which one it was.) And I didn't record
it on my sticky note here attached to the computer screen. Thanks.
Jason is a little crazy, that's why he puts so much into the detail and
sound of the loco's. You don't normally get much of a discount on Rapido
stock since most is limited runs. He was a hobbiest before starting the
company. He has a really coach in his basement, at least a part of one. I
see you improved saying Via. lol You got a lot of comments on it. French
is a second language, English is the national language. That is a touchy
subject here.
Scott
+Scott Downey Quebecois is fine French, it has improved over the years. The French spoken in New Brunswick , I wasn't prepared for at all. I wouldn't suggest it isn't pure French however. It simply went a different direction 300 years ago from the French spoken in France. In Quebec, they seem to have their own slang, as should be expected, but they also use words that haven't been used in France for about 300 years. That is kind of cool.I have heard the stereo of a Nova Scotian stereotype. Newfies get a good bit of that too. Clearly an interesting place.
+Robert Vander Voort You sure did hit the nail on the head. The battle has always been between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Its not the language, there is a bigger issue. They want to separate but keep every thing the same which they can't have. The French language is different every where you go in Canada since its more a slang then pure French. The Federal government doesn't help, they make it worse. Quebec is starting the separation movement again and we are so sick and tired of it. I feel the Federal government should put their foot down instead of giving a little here and there. Every time they start up this separation crap companies and people leave. The vote is always for staying. One thing Quebec forgets is the natives have more of a say about the province then they do. This battle has gone on since the English and the French arrived and I don't thing it will end any time soon. I live in Nova Scotia so we are considered the low class of Canada. We don't have much of say. Most visitors usually prefer this end of the country for the people. Scott
+Scott Downey I figured as much. I have travelled throughout Canada. My most recent trip was a solo bicycle tour From the town of Gaspe in Quebec through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, out to Gros Morne in Newfoundland, back to the train in Truro which took me to my car. From my perspective as an outsider, the pissing match over language was more a symptom of the conflict than the source of the conflict. That was my perception. Quebecois is different from the French spoken in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for example. Cape Breton Island has quite a bit going on culturally and linguistically. In Newfoundland, on the west coast, the regional accents are pronounced. It is all good if you are a visitor. The divisive nature struck me as mostly economic in origin. If a place or people feel they are at the end of their economic rope...... Suddenly, their cultural heritage becomes that much more important. The issue over language in Canada strikes me as something that would be of a pain in the ass to deal with from time to time, but mostly, that fight against against having a more homogenous Canada, one that allows something like the French language to survive is way to your advantage in my opinion. It makes for a far more interesting place. Visiting Atlantic or Maritime Canada is a very interesting, rewarding thing to do, that is a large part of the reason. In terms of amenities, it isn't all the great for many people, but the place and people more than make up for it.
+Robert Vander Voort You are right. Canada is officially bilingual but most consider English the first language. I guess its depends on who you talk to and the part of the country you live in. In Quebec they consider French the first and only language. So I should have said we are officially bilingual even though most do not speak French. Scott
A small correction: French isn't the native language of Canada - Canada is
bilingual, meaning both are official languages. English is used in most of
Canada, French is the primary language in Quebec and some maritime
provinces. Quebec has their own language nazi group that makes a big stink
about anything written in English there.
+jlwii2000 Basically Quebec, which is predominately French, want to protect their French Language and culture. So that is why they have strict (to a point) language laws, like very little if any English on signs, even on menus in a restaurant. The Federal Government of Canada and Federal Government owned companies like VIA Rail are exempt as they offer services in both official languages. Quebec is not really bi-lingual whereas the province of New Brunswick is Canada's only bi-lingual province.
Good, concise review. I really like the B'Mann "Sound Value" line!
They're the Blue Box locos of our time! Good value, good performance, just
enough detail for most, and cheaply and easily upgraded with add-on
details, just like the old Athearn Blue Box locomotives were!
Been collecting those open frame p2k motors similar to Athearn ,but seem to be more smooth and powerful. They are like a drop in replacement for the Athearn locos except that the motor shafts are smaller and require sleeves to use the stock Athearn flywheels .I powered up many dummy Athearn locos that way.
I agree about the B'Mann motors... although they haven't been out long enough to know. One good thing about the old Athearn motors, is that they're infinitely rebuildable! (Only the "brass" motors are worth the time). If you haven't tried an 84060 yet, you SHOULD!! They we're stock in AC4400W's, and most of the P2K line. The smoothest Athearn open frame motors. Period. I have two of them, one with a TCS WOW decoder, the other with a Tsunami, that I added Keep-Alive to... Both of them will CRAWL to a point where I can count one tie every 2 seconds!!!
Well put. .I have about the same time you have with the Athearns. The 84040 motor and up will run smooth if the model is wired from both sides like I have found a crafty clean way to do on all of them .Running smooth on 4 volts dc without stalling and a good polish on there wheels does the trick without replacement. The Bachmann 5 pole skew wound motors are pretty good ,but will not out last the old indestructible Athearn 040 and up motors adjusted properly .Spring tension to the brush ect. I collected quite a few over the years.I agree with you with the rtr models .Price way up there. Why could they not continue the blue box line over in China? There is still a high demand for them.Hard to understand that since they are in a sense Craftsman kits.Would be a great option to have both options.I do not think it would effect profits of the rtr line at all.If anything it would give them much more volume or a larger share of the market that the others that all do rtr now, do not have.Just a thought.
When Irv Athearn died, his kids sold the company to Horizon... First thing Horizon did, was stop production of Blue Box kits. Then, they moved Genesis production to China. Five years later, they shut down the California plant, and moved ALL production to China. Soon after, Horizon bought Roundhouse/MDC. They STOPPED production of all G scale models, and moved HO Scale production to China..... Athearn USED to be made in Southern California. They were good, decent detail, very sturdy models, that with a little work, can be made to look beautiful - even with out of scale width hoods (except SD40-2, GP38/40-2, GP50. & GP60 models). I have almost 400 Blue Box kits, and am pretty happy with what I have done with them! I've been a customer of Athearn, for over 40 years. The stuff they're making now, is killing the hobby! It's ALL RTR, and most of the rolling stock is made with 60+ year old molds, drilled with crap Delrin details added.... And they're selling them for FOUR TIMES AS MUCH!! :(Kids today have NO idea what it's like, to have the satisfaction and pride of building the models themselves. Building our own kits, and detailing them, and scratchbuilding with them, also gave us the skills to FIX any problems we had with our models! WHAT I MEANT by "B'Mann is the new Blue Box" is this: Bachmann is now making CHEAP, decent detailed models now, that run well, but need added details to look better, or to detail for specific prototypes... They come with motors and drives NOW, that are 10 times better and smoother than blue box motors ever were. They ALL now are made with scale width hoods. They are the new inexpensive alternative to the now grossly overpriced Athearn, Atlas, and Kato.... SURE, they USED to be total CRAP. But take a look at what they're selling now! The ONLY thing good about China making American models, is American Companies make more profit. CHINESE workers are making the money, and feeding THEIR families. What's wrong with that? Production is now so far away, that if there are problems, they CAN'T be fixed quickly or easily. Production runs are limited. They only make SO much. If you don't get one in time, tough S***!! You're not getting one! With the OLD Athearn, they made more than enough. Kept the prices low! And he made SO many, that he made a profit from sheer volume. What's really wrong? Yet MORE American workers out of WORK! I have studied, and have written articles on the subject for decades.... I know a thing or two.
+Carmine Allocca No ,The Athearn blue box locos were made in the USA not China and they are built to last .Bachmann is still learning how to do that ,but learning and improving they are. Athearn. build and design were so good Life like proto 2000 cloned there drives. They have actual bronze axle bearings and the ingenious part is not a screw or wire on them.I seen some run 30 years and may need a tune up or a axle gear .Bachmann is not a blue box .For one they were actual Craftsmann kits to where you had to build them up to the level in detail that you wanted or could do .They pretty much had accurate dimensions and detail ,paint and lettering what was there in the kit was correct .Bachmann is nowhere near to the hobby that Athearn was and still is unless you want to just want to buy them out of the box and run them.Sad to see those blue box kits go.And China having to make American model trains for us.What is wrong with that.Or what is right about that?
....... And, the ALCo 244 prime mover sounds are nearly spot on! I've always said, that Soundtraxx needs to sell "Sound Value" decoders separately... Price point of about $50.00. They could put MRC and Digitrax out of business!!! ;)
While Sound Value decoders are made by SoundTraxx, they are not full Tsunami decoders. If you go to the Bachmann page on the SoundTraxx site, they can see the full specs: //www.soundtraxx.com/factory/OEM_pages/bachmann/bachmann.php
James I like the new format but it was missing two pieces of information I
need.
1 The pulling power
2 minimum radius
To me that is more important than going over the detailm
+Joe323 The minimum radius as stated, is 18". I personally, have run it in 15" radius! Pulling power is on par with the rest of the Bachmann line. Pretty impressive. About 20 cars on level track.
I also have to agree I have a Bachmenm Alaska GP40 I have had for 7 years and it's always runs perfect! Last year got NS 1070 for athwart and not even a year old it shorted out.
