I had similar thing with Star Wars Republic Commando. I didn't know a lot about it, I just played it. It was so great to guide your fellow commandos to do such things as sniping or setting detonators and killing army of droids. Unlike many other FPS, it was about strategy. I was so much fun to make a successful plan. For example when you encounter Geonosian elites, just mindlessly shooting them is not a good plan. I made a plan where I put 2 commandos to snipe him, other one to place a bomb while I covered him. And it worked. It was so amazing.

Whenever I played Galatic Conquest on the highest of difficulty, so much strategy had to be put into effect. Taking a planet (especially an enemy one) was so stressful but fun at the same time.

Speaking of turn-based combat, The Banner Saga has been one of the most compelling narratives both told through games and in any medium I've experienced in a while. Give it a try. Also I love games in life, so yay.
