The difference between a local jail and a federal prison are very clear and simple: A jail is for short term incarceration for those awaiting trial, or for sentenced terms of one year or less. A federal prison is for longer term sentences of Convicted Crimes. Once you have been tried and sentenced, you are incarcerated In Prison. And (as above) since 2001 - 2010 The US has Imprisoned (sentenced to terms Longer then 12 months) 8.2 Million felons on marijuana related crimes, predominantly Possession. This is not some wild claim, but from the US Federal Prison reports themselves.
