Raw video Rena Ship disaster Tauranga New Zealand
Raw video of my (bumpy) trip out to the Rena immediately after stormy weather Wed 12 Oct 2011 Shot for TV3 News, please dont steal this video, this includes ...
@hannessolo Thank you for the response - I must admit I made my comment
before seeing the whole video - I now am aware that this ship is probably
going to 'die' where it is.If the hull is split, it will tear wide open if
theres any attempt made to re float it. I agree with you - for all the
damage done both ecologically and the loss of cargo and ship plus the
danger the captain put his crew, I think 10 to 20 years should be a more
realitic jail sentence.
@colliecandle in the news u hear that workers are on board who try to pump
out the oil. its just a question of time when it will sink. it lies on a
reef therefore it hasnt sunk already. the reef is on every sea cart since
200 years. apparently it was the captains birthday and he wanted to take a
shortcut and know he might go to jail for 1 year, which is not enough in my
opinion. those people should get harder sentences.
@N9155E I agree. The owners are culpable, but nonetheless the captain is
the person who must bear main responsibility as he is the man who has total
control of anything and everything that happens whilst the ship is in his
care - on a ship, even the owners are secondary to a captain - his
decisions outweigh theirs period. This is maritime law.
@colliecandle : You might be aware that maritime law does not prevent such
massive disasters at all, so things will repeat and repeat. Put the captain
in jail even for 10 years, the tax payer cares for the rest. Not a very
smart approach in my understanding. By the way, where is this captain
currently??
@Jamjar107 some guy thought he was very clever and decided to shut all the
systems down on the ship before abandoning it as they deemed it a fire
risk, now they are unable to restart those systems with the ship on such a
list. and hence everythings cooled down
If the BOW containers break away the ship will probably float off the reef
on its own since only the bow is aground. If THAT happens and there is no
tow to either port or deep water then she is at the mercy of the waves and
currents.
Criticsm should be levelled at the authorities who didnt act sooner to pump
out the oil while it was still warm and liquid. Those semi floating
containers must be a worry to other boats as they could hardly be seen in
the water.
I hope somebody is held accountable for this (what appears to be) totally
avoidable disaster. How many fish and birds are going to die because of
this mess. Very sad.
@colliecandle : you should consider to jail the ship owners, the maritime
authorities and government of Liberia allowing that profit is made with
such wrecks.
