They might just be kids, but they're some of the smartest, most talented people in the world. From an 11 year old Harvard student to a teenager helping the US ...
I think it was the MKULTRA guys' fault for driving a perfectly good kid
batshit insane. If they waste tax money on such an inhumane ass thing again
i'm moving to japan.
+oblong I think whoever was his art dealer or representative should have sorted that money stuff out for him. A lot of artists just want affirmation for their work and for themselves. To be free to create and be able to eat and pay the bills. He got involved in the dodgy celebrity world where art and pop culture clash. Had he lived I'm pretty sure he would have matured and removed himself from that world. Maybe he needed a mentor to advise him, someone he could look up too and respect, like you say.....crazy world !!
+Petre .W.Strange isn't it? To have at your fingertips the means to do anything you want and then to just blow it. I think artists in all mediums still adore fame. Not that it's all bad, but held in too high as a priority. Give the darn money away for crying out loud! Basquiat could have easily hired a financial manager instead of keeping money lying around in an apartment. Crazy world
+oblong Yeah, I get it when you say you are only thinking !.... Unfortunately I don't think he could think beyond that without artificial stimulation (drugs). Other artists did the same and died young. It is not unusual !!..
+Petre .W.But with tons of money what does it take to think of how you are going to protect yourself. He wasn't stupid and he wasn't all that young at least when he died. For me, he couldn't go beyond the level of fame and the empty goal it turns out to be. I've not had it so I'm only thinking here. Fame builds up a person's ego and confidence but after the initial adrenaline rush of people fawning over you there is nothing much left except dealing with it. I just think everyone just felt so sorry for him like he was a little boy. I don't believe this was him. He must have had some other qualities that are less superficial than just him being "fragile" Not everything is presented in one documentary either so what we are being informed of is the film's creator and the people that they chose to ask questions of.Getting to the root of why he didn't protect himself isn't very clear to me. Particularly with his knowledge of what homelessness was all about. He threw parties and stuff...traveled. He should have beyond influences of fame but he obviously didn't. I don't know..maybe he was just a good painter that was a dork as a person; I'm just not going for the whole poor fragile Jean. He had a chance to do good for not only himself but for others. There's TONS of stuff to do that is at a person's fingertips when one has money. As far as people go, I think people didn't feel comfortable to be with his new group of people once he made it...I mean that's what at least one person said in this documentary. He did have some friends he hung with though near the end. If he hadn't died from an accidental overdose he probably would have sought to free himself from all that celebrity stuff and from other celebs too.
+oblongI think his friends were blinded by his wealth and celebrity, they were from where he was, after all. It seems he did try and include them by buying all that expensive food and all the drugs and alcohol !!..... However,....money is a god for some people, as is celebrity. He thought he had got there and didn't know where to go next !! That is where he was let down !!..
+Petre .W. He shouldn't have kept fame as his predominant goal. In the end he got what he wanted. I am not saying he's an asshole, it's just that it is clear from this documentary, he was not just a great painter but one who was distracted from idealistic thinking..having art being the soul of his existence .. fully. Yes he got famous and rich, but it wasn't fulfilling as money never does buy ideals making them a part of a person's identity and strength. Money is paradoxically a robber. So he'll be a legend for as long as history allows. That's great and I love his painting. I just cringed when he was interviewed with Andy Warhol and he's saying how he had heard it was easy to get in but HE never had a hard time getting in...also his friends felt uncomfortable with him and his new and rich friends as time went on. This cannot be a good thing for a person to allow happen in their lives. Where is the loyalty...the true friendship? Sounds like his friends let a lot go as far as this goes so hopefully he made it up to people in his lifetime before he died anyway. Maybe his friends also are guided by fame as far as what is good in life. Maybe this is too old school...to have real ideals. Now we all need money I'm not stupid. It's just that life is not about emptiness alone..it's about making something out of life...creativity. This isn't the goal of just artists. It's all of us. Still in our lives these days money is the GOD. It still is worshiped and the people still worship those who have it whether it be a person running for president or current contemporary artists who are judged as great for selling paintings etc. for the most money. People will disagree with me I know but for me my bones ache and I cringe when listening to junk posted as accolades for artists etc., who have "made it" and rolling in dough and blah blah blah....in the end history will judge them very harshly.Basquiat's paintings DID have content despite his misguided energies. It's very obvious in his work; one can't miss it. Yes his work has worth attributed to him in terms of dollars and cents by those "in the know". But for people searching for content his work will always touch them where it is the most meaningful and desperate.
