Russell Phillips' Fatal Crash
Russell Phillips is killed during the 1995 Winston 100 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. On the 37th of the sixty-seven laps planned for the event, two cars spun in...
Wikipedia:
Phillips, whose upper body was ground against the track's steel catch fence
and a caution light fixture at high speed, was both partially dismembered
and decapitated, in what a photographer on-scene described as "as gruesome
a wreck as I can ever recall".[2] In video footage taken at the scene of
the accident, the first rescuer is initially shown running to the car, then
immediately turning away after seeing Phillips' body and realizing the
hopelessness of any attempt at resuscitation. The track was littered with
car debris, blood, and numerous body parts, necessitating a complete and
lengthy red flag while track officials wearing surgical gloves placed white
sheets over various body parts in the vicinity of the crash. The driver's
head - still in the racing helmet - was found at the entrance of the pit
road, and one of his hands was found suspended in the retaining fence
+NBreezii at around 5 seconds you can clearly see the caution light ripping through the bodywork and i believe thats the exact spot where the driver sits. D:So it rips through his upper body aswell. :S
does anybody know if this was the same russ phillips that used to race at
i70 and sometimes i44 speedways? it probably says in the comments but im
too lazy to read em all. rip russ
+ Andria Fisher you are correct it couldn't of been a pretty sight at all, I've never seen the pics released but I read the full accident report, if you see towards the end of the video there is a helmet that rolls alnost onto pit road, report said head and neck still attached inside the helmet. They had massive amounts of body parts and tissue left hanging in the catch fence and that all was left of him in the car was legs and to lower torso everything else was ground down to just a mess.
+Sam Butler Nah. His helmet with the head inside was 50 yards away by the side of the track. One of his hands was snagged in the catch fence where it'd been ripped off.Ground the poor bastard out like a cigarette butt on concrete.
+Sam Butler You're stretching it for the sake of drama bro. He died on impact and if not, he would've been knocked out cold long before he ever woke up to think about what happened.
+Arthur Compton He probably saw some of the drivers shredded upper body parts and/ or his helmet... head still inside. The human brain still functions for a very short bit after decapitation. Imagine what he saw in his last moments and just after decapitation. The immediate realization that his head was cut off must have been the worst last thing anyone could witness...
+Sam Butler At about 0:21 you can see him peering into the car as he sprays the extinguisher all over Phillips. Then, as he quickly grasps what he's dealing with, he stops spraying, then appears to make a quick, dismissive "throat cut" or wave-off type gesture a couple of times. He doesn't quite run away from the car, but he's clearly saying that the occupant is beyond saving.EDIT: On second look, I think at the end he's pointing the tow truck driver at the other car, the one still in traffic, and telling him to pull it off the track.
+Andria Fisher Same for that first track official to get there with the extinguisher. There was no immediate fire, but he sprayed the extinguisher i think to try to hide the severity of it all from the stands and other drivers. kinda like how they conveniently park the track trucks in the way of the broadcast positions around the track when there is even a slight possibility of it being gruesome.
