No worries. I'm a bit of a car snob ;)Re: oil, I'm not sure .. I also heard the US wouldn't import oil anymore, but I somewhat doubt this would work long-term.
+Raging Goblin I really don't know much about cars, as you can probably tell. I heard that we no longer import oil. But then I heard the opposite in a hang out yesterday.
I think I get what you mean.. but I think it's really more of a numbers game (# of cylinders and displacement, not actual power). And with 60s technology engines I mean almost all engines still stuffed under the plastic hoods of a modern Dodge, Chrystler, etc. That's one of the reasons they're still rather cheap .. not a lot of R&D went into them, just the same stuff, re-packaged.European and Asian "regulars" are just fine with 4 cylinders, up to 2l and you'd still get approx. 200hp out of those, without a lot of performance add-ons. They may not have the low-RPM rumble, but I can deal with that when I see those disappear in my rearview-mirror :)
+Raging Goblin No, when I said Americans want more power, I meant a contemporary 6 cylinder. A 1960's V8? That borderlines on treason and who has the money anyway? This guy I used to work with said "we shouldn't drill for oil in Alaska and destroy it's pristine beauty" and I said, If that's how you feel, then why the fuck do you drive a muscle car. He go quite after that.
Power is one thing .. but power wasted due to heavy chassis and rubbery suspension or power induced by trying to pump more fuel into an engine designed in the 60s makes American cars the laughing stock of the rest of the world (apart from Canada, maybe). Also, Diesels ... higher efficiency, lower gas mileage, a beautiful low-end torque and nowadays rather common in touring car championships (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_R10_TDI). Yet the only companies that sell Diesels in the US are VW, Audi, Mercedes (trucks don't count).Tesla seems to be the big exception .. I wouldn't say no to one.
6 cylinders are really not necessary, unless in heavy-duty (i.e. Diesel) or performance vehicles.FWIW, Gumpert squeezed north of 400hp out of 4 cylinders (admittedly, at a price). For most commuters, a hatchback is more than enough.. and those that think they're too wimpy, have never driven a finely tuned Golf GTI and taken it into a corner :)
Depends on when and by whom they were built .. the original Italian Isetta had a 2-stroke split-single (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split-single) .. the one built by BMW had a 250cc single 4-stroke (a former motorcycle engine, I think). Not sure about other variants.
But they'd be getting better gas mileage :)They were built with horrendous gas prices in mind ... and to be honest, I'd rather people drive these instead of having millions of morons being the sole passengers in huge trucks, clogging up streets and parking spaces. They're a bit of a deathtrap in accidents, I'd admit ;)
