I made a food plot late summer to attract deer and animals. The plot is made with only hand tools. Take a look at before and after shots. Trail camera footage ...
@mistermike614 I have had some problems with properties and things like
that so while me and my dad look for a piece of property (but we got one in
our sights) we hunt one of my dad friends property. When her husband meet
us he told us not to plant anything that would bring deer in or to cut down
any trees. That was 2 years ago and he now trusts us to go in the house he
has and take care of the place. If i were to get the chance i would plant
1/2 of an acre of clover and 1 acre of corn.
@niggahigganum2 yea hunting access is hard to get. This season I am going
to plant mostly clover that seems to be the best thing the deer like. I
have not shot any deer over the plot yet but last year before i made it I
got a 6pt by bow right were the plot is now. It was difficult making it
since its on the side of a mountain, very steep. I am going to buy some
kind of disc for the atv to make it easier..
@mistermike614 An atv would help a whole lot. You could do many thing with
it. You dont have to buy a disc and things like that if your going to plant
clover. Im sure you know already but clover survives 3-6 years so it better
to rent one from Gander mountain. Even if you are planting a seasonal it
easier if you rent but if you find it for the right price the by all means
get it.
Mike its Don Bondi. Thats so funny...I was looking up how to make a food
plot and I noticed you in this video! Small world. I have 63 acres of land
in haines falls, ny that im looking to scout soon for the fall. Let me know
if your interested in getting together and possibly helping me out..
Cant really get a tractor up the mountain too steep, so have to use hand
equipment. I use a weed wacker and a push brush mower. Due to hurricane
Irena last year the stream washed away my atv trail. Finally just finished
a 24 foot bridge to get back up to the plot.
@xlildonx your about an hour from my place upstate, thats cool you
hunt.....i think you said you were making in in a week or two let me know
how it goes, i am pretty busy the next few weeks and would not be free for
a wile...good luck
What part of NY do u hunt. I hunt Gardiner But i live in the city but im
not a cidiot i let the little guys pass. Its surprisingly easy for me a 16
year old.
Joe was going to help me plant some food plots. After doing a lot of prep work weeks before, we couldn't remove anything with farm implements for the ATV's.

+Steve Rob Here's Mike's reply: I hadn't considered that some people can't use herbicides. The only thing he can do is clip the plots more often. This should cut down on the weeds maturing to seed and it also causes the clover to thicken. I'd also recommend a soil test to check his ph levels. Clovers like to have a 6.5 to 7 ph to be at optimal growth levels. Lime increases ph, sulfur decreases ph.
thanks for the reply and Mikes input. Up in Ontario We cant use herbicides unless your licenced. I have a 10 ac spot I use for deer and the hardest thing for me is getting clover to survive, it does come up in the spring but the weed just smother it out. I did plow ,disk , cultivate and harrow and seed 5 years ago and man it looked like a golf course when done but big mistake and now its weeds like crazy. I have tried for three years frost seeding as to not disturb the soil but im not getting anywhere. Ha , this is the difference between me doing it the wrong way and your guest Mike knowing the right way.
+Steve Rob Here's Mike's reply: Frost seeding is an effective alternative for perennial crops like clover & chicory. I've also had great success frost seeding native grasses and forbes. I still apply herbicides to cut down on competitive weeds and grasses and prefer to do a controlled burn before I broadcast the seed so that I can increase seed to soil contact.
